What does an entry level wealth management advisor do?

An Entry Level Wealth Management Advisor helps clients understand and manage their finances by offering advice on investments, retirement planning, and other financial goals. They typically work under the guidance of more experienced advisors at the beginning of their careers, learning how to analyze financial information, recommend suitable products, and build client relationships. Entry level advisors focus on developing their skills, gaining certifications, and building a client base while providing support for more senior team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level wealth management advisor?

To thrive as an Entry Level Wealth Management Advisor, you need a solid understanding of financial principles, investment strategies, and at least a bachelor's degree in finance or a related field. Familiarity with CRM systems, financial planning software, and obtaining relevant certifications like the Series 7 or Series 66 licenses are typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and the ability to build trust with clients make someone stand out in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for providing sound financial advice, fostering lasting client relationships, and achieving business growth.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level wealth management advisors during their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Entry level wealth management advisors often face challenges such as building a client base from scratch, learning to effectively communicate complex financial concepts, and adapting to a fast-paced, performance-driven environment. To overcome these obstacles, new advisors should actively seek mentorship from senior colleagues, participate in ongoing training programs, and focus on building trust and rapport with potential clients. Emphasizing strong organizational skills and a willingness to continuously learn will help advisors navigate their first year and lay the groundwork for long-term success.

Job description

Location: Madison, Wisconsin (Full-Time/Hybrid)

Compensation: Base salary + benefits

The Opportunity:

Our client is a growing independent wealth management firm looking for a Wealth Management Client Associate who is excited to build a long-term career in the industry.

You will work directly alongside two experienced CFP professionals who want to teach, mentor, and develop someone into an exceptional wealth management professional. The role will be primarily in-office while you're learning the business, with the opportunity for a hybrid schedule as you become established in the role.

Role Responsibilities (first 9-12 months):

  • Learn the business and build a strong technical foundation
  • Learn the firm's financial planning and investment philosophy
  • Become highly proficient in eMoney
  • Prepare and update comprehensive financial plans
  • Support advisors with meeting preparation, analysis, and follow-up
  • Learn the firm's technology, custodial, and operational processes
  • Cross-train in client service and operations
  • Complete your Series 7 and 66, if needed, with firm support
  • Begin or continue working toward your CFP designation

The goal is to understand how the entire client experience comes together before taking on significant client responsibility.

Role Trajectory:

  • Take ownership of more complex financial planning work
  • Participate more actively in client meetings
  • Lead planning engagements for emerging and next-generation clients
  • Build trusted relationships with existing clients
  • Help expand the firm's standalone financial planning offering
  • Earn your CFP designation with firm support

From there, your career path can evolve based on your strengths and interests. You may grow into a Wealth Advisor managing client relationships, or become a planning-focused CFP who plays an integral role in delivering sophisticated financial planning across the firm. Significant business development is not a requirement for success in this role.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in & a passion for wealth management, financial services, banking, investments, or a related field
  • A solid understanding of financial planning fundamentals
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Curiosity, initiative, and a desire to grow
  • The ability to take direction and then run with a project
  • A genuine interest in earning the CFP and building a career in wealth management
  • Experience with eMoney, Pershing, the SIE, Series 7, Series 66, or CFP coursework is a plus, but not required

Compensation & Benefits:

Compensation will be based on experience, licensing, and the level of responsibility you can take on from the beginning, with meaningful long-term earning potential as your role grows.

Benefits include:

  • Health insurance with approximately 90% of premiums paid by the firm
  • Safe Harbor 401(k) with a 4% employer match
  • 14 days of PTO plus paid holidays
  • Company-sponsored licensing and CFP support
  • Direct mentorship from experienced CFP professionals
  • Hybrid flexibility as you become established in the role

Why This Opportunity Is Different:

The firm's founders came through traditional advisor training programs where success was largely measured by how quickly you could produce. They want to offer someone a different path. You'll have the time to learn, strong mentorship, exposure to real financial planning, and the opportunity to grow into the role that best fits your strengths. They're not looking for someone who already knows everything. They're looking for someone who's hungry to learn, passionate about wealth management, and excited to grow with the firm.
