What does an entry level user experience designer do?

An Entry Level User Experience (UX) Designer assists in creating user-friendly digital products, such as websites and apps, by focusing on how users interact with them. They conduct user research, participate in designing wireframes and prototypes, and collaborate with other team members to ensure the product is intuitive and meets user needs. Entry-level UX designers often learn on the job, gaining experience in usability testing and the basics of visual design. Their goal is to help make products easy and enjoyable to use.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level user experience designer?

To thrive as an Entry Level User Experience Designer, you need a solid understanding of user-centered design principles, wireframing, and usability testing, typically supported by a degree in design, HCI, or a related field. Familiarity with design tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and prototyping platforms is commonly expected. Creativity, collaboration, and strong communication skills help you present ideas effectively and work well with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure you can create intuitive, user-friendly interfaces that align with both user needs and business goals.

What types of projects and team collaborations can an entry level user experience designer expect in their first year?

As an Entry Level User Experience Designer, you will typically work on a variety of projects ranging from assisting with user research and wireframing to participating in design sprints and usability testing. Job description

UX/UI Designer Role Summary:

Pininfarina is a global icon of design excellence. Founded in Turin, Italy, the brand is synonymous with purity of form, technological innovation, and timeless elegance. While best known for shaping automotive history, Pininfarina today operates across transportation, architecture, interiors, industrial design, and digital experiencesโ€”creating holistic, future-facing solutions where physical and digital seamlessly converge.

Pininfarina of America is seeking a UI/UX Designer to join our Miami studio. This role is ideal for a designer with refined visual sensibility, a strong user-centered mindset, and the ability to translate lifestyle insights into meaningful digital and, when applicable, physical interface concepts. The UI/UX Designer collaborates with multidisciplinary teamsโ€”including industrial designers, engineers, strategists, and brand experts to help define and deliver coherent, elegant user experiences aligned to human behavior and business objectives.

This position may involve exploring emerging technologies and AI-assisted workflows as part of the design process.

Pininfarina of America is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative studio environment.

Job Duties & Essential Responsibilities:
  • Support the design of clear, intuitive user interfaces for digital experiences (and, where relevant, digital-physical touchpoints), with a strong focus on usability, accessibility, and visual quality.
  • Contribute to UI/UX solutions across multiple industries, including mobility, consumer products, architecture, and smart environments.
  • Assist in translating user research, lifestyle insights, trend inputs, and design direction into interface concepts.
  • Apply user-centered design and design thinking methodologies under the guidance of senior designers.
  • Create user flows, wireframes, information architecture, prototypes, and high-fidelity visual mockups to communicate design intent.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners (industrial design, engineering, project teams, and brand/strategy) throughout the design process.
  • Support internal and client-facing presentations and design reviews; incorporate feedback and iterate accordingly.
  • Maintain design consistency, accuracy, and attention to detail through development and implementation phases; support design handoff requirements as needed.
  • Adhere to studio processes, documentation standards, and project timelines.
  • Responsibilities may evolve based on business needs.
Qualifications & Skills:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Graphic Design, Multimedia Design, Industrial Design, UI/UX Design, Interaction Design, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 1โ€“3 years of professional and/or relevant internship experience in UI/UX or digital product design.
  • Strong visual design fundamentals, including typography, layout, hierarchy, and color.
  • Solid understanding of user-centered design principles, interaction design, and usability best practices.
  • Proficiency in Figma; familiarity with Sketch is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop and Illustrator).
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills; ability to present work and rationale effectively.
  • Strong interest in cross-disciplinary collaboration and continuous evolution of design workflows.
  • Experience with motion or multimedia tools (e.g., After Effects) is a plus.
  • Exposure to 3D/CAD/visualization tools (e.g., Blender) is a plus, particularly for digital-physical experiences.
  • Curiosity and openness toward emerging tools, technologies, and AI-assisted design workflows.
  • Fluent in English; proficiency in Italian or Portuguese is a plus.
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Technical Proficiency (Preferred Tools)

  • UI/UX & Prototyping: Figma
  • Graphic Design: Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Motion (Plus): After Effects
  • Collaboration: Microsoft 365
  • 3D & Visualization (Plus): Blender
