Department Bio - The GW Department of Philosophy is a research-active, congenial group, with over 20 full- and part-time faculty members who are pluralistic in training. Our departmental expertise spans both continental and analytic traditions, with courses exploring the many facets of philosophy, from ethics to legal applications; environmental philosophy to the philosophy of race, gender and disability. Our faculty have served on the President's Council on Bioethics, researched with the National Institute for Health and offered advisory support at the Census Bureau.

Position Specific Summary - The student will be the first point of contact for visitors to the Philosophy Department. Tasks will include: greeting visitors, responding to in person and phone inquiries, providing customer service to other students, faculty, and staff; directing inquiries to the appropriate resources as needed; and assisting with other office tasks. The department will host several visiting lecturers in the fall and spring semesters, usually on Friday afternoons. The student may be asked to help with coordinating catering delivery and/or pickup, coordinating guest seating, attending the lectures, and breaking down the catering set-up after the event. In addition, Philosophy professors may ask the administrative assistant to assist with photocopies or other tasks related to organizing their research materials.

Standard Position Description - The student will serve as an administrative assistant and perform tasks to support the operations of the office or department. Tasks may include: assembling materials, filing, photocopying, giving directions or information, responding to phone or email inquiries, scanning and indexing documents, light data entry, and other general office tasks. Special projects or duties may be assigned related to specific office needs.

Required Qualifications - This is an entry level position, little to no experience required, all training will be provided.

Preferred Qualifications - We have a strong preference for students either majoring or minoring in Philosophy who may benefit from the opportunity to help faculty with organizing research readings/material. While this will not be the majority of the job, it can become an aspect as the academic year progresses.
