Job description

ZTEX Construction is a heavy civil contractor specializing in earthwork, concrete, asphalt paving, underground utilities, and overall project management. We are locally owned, and we are currently looking for Pipefitters with entry-level experience with underground utilities.
Pipefitters design, install, maintain, and repair pipe systems used to transport various substances like steam, fluids, and gases in industrial and commercial settings. They use a variety of tools and techniques, including welding, brazing, soldering, and threading, to assemble and secure pipes and fittings
Job Summary
A pipefitter, repairs, and maintains piping systems. They read design specifications necessary for building appropriate heating, cooling, steam generation, and industrial piping assemblies. They may also work across different environments, from industrial settings, home installations, to install pipe systems in commercial buildings.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Selects type and size of pipe and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to job specifications.
  • Inspects worksite to determine presence of obstructions.
  • Plans sequence on installation to avoid obstructions and activities of other workers.
  • Cuts pipe using hacksaw, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch and pipe cutting machine.
  • Threads pipe using threading machine.
  • Bends pipe by hand or with pipe-bending tools and machine.
  • Mounts pipe hangers and brackets on walls and ceiling to hold pipe.
  • Assembles and installs a variety of metal or nonmetal pipes and pipe fittings, using threaded caulked, soldering, brazen, fused, or cemented joints, and hand tools.
  • Secures pipes to structure with bracket, clamps, and hangers, using hand and power tools.
  • Installs and maintains refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including compressors, pumps, meter, pneumatic and hydraulic controls, and piping.
  • Tests piping systems for leaks by increasing pressure in pipes and observing gauges attached to pipes for indication of leaks.
  • Welds pipe supports to structural steel members.
  • Observes production machines in assigned area of manufacturing facility to detect machinery malfunctions.
  • Loads, transports, and unloads material, tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Performs minor maintenance of cleaning activities of tools and equipment.
  • Observes and complies with all safety and project rules and all company policies and procedures
  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Education, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong understanding of pipe fitting principles, pipe systems, safety regulations, and relevant building codes.
  • Ability to measure, calculate, and perform accurate calculations for pipe sizing, fitting, and installation.
  • Ability to work with tools and equipment, understand mechanical systems, and troubleshoot problems.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and work with heavy pipes and equipment.
  • Knowledge of health and safety guidelines when dealing with dangerous equipment or chemicals.
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations and procedures related to gas handling and pipeline work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, other tradespeople, and clients.

Education, Training and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a pipefitter
  • 1 year experience in construction/ underground utilities experience.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Must be work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements, heat/cold temperatures, wind, rain, blowing dust.
  • Able to work around moving equipment and tolerate loud noise levels.
  • Ability to perform intense manual labor.
  • Bend and stoop repeatedly throughout the day.
  • Able to push, pull and lift 50+lbs.
  • Able to walk and stand for long periods of time.
  • Able to walk on rough, rocky and uneven surfaces at construction sites.

Additional Qualifying Factors
As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical screening. If applicable to the contract, you may also be required to submit through a background check. Must have reliable transportation to/from work and must have a valid driver's license at time of application.
