JOB TITLE:                 Grounds and General Maintenance Technician 

FLSA CLASSIFICATION:         Non-exempt, hourly employee.

WORK DAYS:                 261 days (including paid holidays and paid vacation time).

STANDARD HOURS PER DAY:     8 hours per day (not including a 30-minute unpaid duty-free meal break).

WORK YEAR: The work year for the Grounds and General Maintenance Technician begins on the first weekday in July, and ends 12 months later on the last weekday in June.

SALARY SCHEDULE & BENEFITS: The Grounds and General Maintenance Technician is paid on the "Maintenance, Grounds and Skilled Personnel" salary schedule, and is eligible for benefits on the "Support Staff" benefits schedule.

REPORTS TO: The Grounds and General Maintenance Technician is directly supervised by the General Maintenance Foreman. Both the Grounds and General Maintenance Technician and the General Maintenance Foreman are supervised by the Assistant Director of Facilities Support.

SUPERVISES: The Grounds and General Maintenance Technician does not supervise any other employee(s).

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: 

Under direct supervision, the Grounds and General Maintenance Technician performs basic maintenance work related to the care and upkeep of school district property. The Grounds and General Maintenance Technician generally functions in an entry-level capacity, and functions independently within the scope of abilities, or participates in projects as part of a work crew. Work areas include, but are not necessarily limited to, grounds maintenance, pavement maintenance, and tree trimming. Work objectives are to maintain cleanliness, order, and environmentally safe conditions of school district property. Performs related work as directed. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Functions independently, or as part of a work crew engaged in school district property maintenance projects and tasks.
2. Performs grounds maintenance activities, i.e., cutting, mowing, weed-eating, edging, blowing, planting foliage.
3. Performs shrubbery and tree maintenance activities, i.e., pruning limbs, shaping hedges, and cutting branches.
4. Performs pavement and asphalt maintenance activities, i.e., cutting out edges, patching sidewalks, patching potholes.
5. Performs structural maintenance activities, i.e., the painting of playgound and field equipment, repairing fences and gates, preparing athletic fields.
6. Maintains materials and supplies usage records for district inventory and property accounting purposes.
7. Operates various electric, gas and manually powered tools and equipment, i.e., saws, sprayers, air compressors, mowers, blowers, weed-eaters, hedge trimmers.
8. Assists with various facilities and trades maintenance and repair tasks within scope of abilities.
9. Ensures cleanliness, order, and environmentally safe conditions of district property; addresses safety concerns in a time efficient manner; reports real or potential maintenance/repair needs.
10. Ensures proper cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, and materials utilized; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe use and operation of equipment, tools, and materials.
11. Performs clean up and work site restoration activities, i.e., picking up litter, disposing of waste and debris, cleaning surfaces.
12. Responds to and takes appropriate actions in the event of emergency or critical incidents to resolve, confine, or otherwise prevent potentially injurious or hazardous conditions.
13. Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job-appropriate, being used by Warren.
14. With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in the current position.
15. Responsible for the timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities. 

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members. 

1. Performs related duties as directed. 

ENTRY-LEVEL REQUIREMENTS:

1. EDUCATION/TRAINING: High school diploma or GED is required.
2. EXPERIENCE: Any previous experience demonstrating ability to fulfill the physical and dexterity requirements of the work, as applicable to the assigned maintenance area (i.e., grounds maintenance, pavement maintenance, tree trimming); or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
3. CERTIFICATIONS &/OR LICENSES: Requires the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Indiana driver's license to operate district vehicles.
4. OTHER: Ability to perform the essential functions, meet the performance aptitudes, and fulfill the physical/sensory/environmental requirements of the job (with or without reasonable accommodations) is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds). 

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. 

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dust, noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, strong odors and toxic/poisonous agents.
