Position Title: English as a Second Language (ESOL) Instructor for Adults

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Employment Type: Part time (6 hours a week for 8 weeks)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Identity, a nonprofit community-based organization dedicated to supporting youth and their families, is seeking a dynamic, culturally responsive, part-time ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Instructor to provide English language instruction to adult learners (ages 18 and older) in Montgomery County. Instruction may take place in community-based settings, virtually, in person, or through a hybrid model, depending on the assigned cohort.


The ESOL Instructor will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging, trauma-informed lessons tailored to the unique needs of immigrant adults. Instruction will focus on developing practical English language skills that support everyday communication, educational success, workforce readiness, and community integration. The instructor will foster a welcoming and supportive learning environment that builds learners’ confidence and promotes personal, academic, and professional growth.


The ideal candidate will be bilingual in English and Spanish, have experience working with vulnerable adult populations, and demonstrate a strong commitment to empowering English language learners through culturally responsive teaching practices.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan, develop, and deliver engaging ESOL lessons tailored to beginner level.
  • Teach English language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking with an emphasis on real-life communication and workforce readiness. Use real-life, functional English tied to everyday living, school success, and entry-level workforce needs.
  • Differentiate instruction for multi-level classes, including pre-literate, beginner, and intermediate learners.
  • Create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages participation, cultural respect, and confidence-building.
  • Integrate interactive activities, games, and technology to enhance language learning and keep students engaged.
  • Assess student progress through informal and formal evaluations; provide feedback and adjust instruction as needed.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, progress records, and other required documentation.
  • Coordinate access to educational technology (Chromebooks, apps, learning platforms) and support learners in using it.
  • Collaborate with program staff, case managers, and other instructors to identify and address barriers to learning (e.g., attendance, personal challenges).
  • Adheres to all client confidentiality requirements and standards.
  • Participates with focus and professionalism at required trainings, presentations and meetings.
  • Provide quarterly reports of all activities completed and/or services rendered during the reporting timeline.
  • Maintains organized and updated physical and electronic files on each client, including relevant documentation: signed forms and releases; follow-up, exit, and satisfaction surveys. Adheres to all federal, state and local client document confidentiality requirements.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations that involve or impact youth safety and security.
  • Support Identity’s mission and values, seek opportunities to improve the organization, align work with Identity’s strategic goals, and contribute ideas and suggestions professionally
  • Participate in program and funder-required trainings.
  • Coordinate with two Identity program locations; adapt lessons to site schedule, space, and technology access.
  • Support dual-enrolled learners participating in both ESOL and GED programming.
Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, Human Services, Social Sciences, or related field.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish.
  • Experience teaching adult learners, high school equivalency programs, or youth education programs.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and experience with database management systems.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license are required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences and deliver professional public presentations.
  • Highly organized, adaptable, and capable of managing multiple responsibilities in a dynamic, youth-centered environment.
  • Evening hours may be required.
