Job Description
Vehicle Test Automation Scripter
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Milford Proving Ground in Milford (MI) three times per week, at minimum.
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Role
As a Vehicle Test Automation Scripter, you will design, build, and maintain robust automated test solutions that ensure the quality and reliability of vehicle software across multiple programs and features. You will partner closely with Test Champions and cross-functional teams to translate test needs into scalable automation, reduce test setup time, and improve overall team efficiency.

You will also perform core Vehicle Software Test Engineer responsibilities, including owning test requests end-to-end, building test plans, executing tests, triaging defects, and reporting results.
What You'll Do
  • Design, develop, and maintain robust, reusable robot scripts that minimize script-related failures and support multiple programs and features.
  • Partner with Test Champions to meet scripting needs and deliver customized solutions for active test requests.
  • Apply proficiency in scripting tools and languages (Robot Framework, Autobot, Python, VSpy Automation, PowerShell, etc.) to build automation scripts and contribute enhancements to AIRE tools, templates, and workflows adopted by the team.
  • Participate in sprint planning and complete assigned stories within sprint or release timelines.
  • Ensure code quality through appropriate sanity testing and effective GitHub practices, including submitting PRs and participating in code reviews.
  • Maintain clear, accurate documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences to support reuse and onboarding.
  • Demonstrate continuous technical development and apply new skills directly to production tests and automation solutions.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in software development and/or software test automation, ideally in complex systems.
  • Strong proficiency in one or more scripting/programming languages (specifically Python and Robot Framework) and comfort learning new tools as needed.
  • Hands-on experience developing and executing automated and manual test cases, including defect logging and triage.
  • Familiarity with GitHub or similar source control platforms, including pull requests and code review participation.
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills, with a proven ability to work effectively across functions and with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage work across multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated integrity, accountability, and ownership mindset.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on root cause and long-term solutions.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate test vehicles, as required for test activities.

What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience with automotive software platforms and diagnostic tools (e.g., Vehicle Spy, INCA).
  • Advanced experience with test automation frameworks (especially Autobot, Robot Framework and Python) and automation of vehicle-level tests.
  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and/or lab automation environments.
  • Full vehicle integration or end-to-end validation experience across multiple modules or domains.
  • Proven track record of driving process improvements and standardization in test or automation workflows.
