Product Engineer

Job Summary

The Product Engineer will support the development, improvement, and implementation of Hörmann garage door products and components. This role will work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Sales, Quality, and Service to develop new products, improve existing products, reduce costs, and improve manufacturability and production processes.

Strong knowledge of the garage door industry and its components is required. The ideal candidate will have experience with or a strong understanding of garage door systems, including sections, tracks, springs, rollers, hinges, brackets, drums, cables, shafts, seals, weatherstripping, and related hardware.

This is an on-site position based in Puyallup, Washington.

This position is open to both entry-level and senior candidates, with responsibilities based on experience and technical capabilities.

Major Responsibilities / Activities

  • Support new product and component development from concept through production.
  • Improve existing products to enhance quality, cost, performance, and manufacturability.
  • Work with Manufacturing, Sales, Quality, and Service to identify and resolve product and process issues.
  • Develop and maintain BOMs, routings, costing, drawings, specifications, and work instructions.
  • Support product testing, production trials, and implementation of new or modified products.
  • Process Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) as needed.
  • Develop and improve manufacturing processes using Lean and continuous improvement principles.
  • Support installation, service, and technical documentation.
  • Analyze problems, develop solutions, and implement improvements.
  • Be willing to work hands-on in the manufacturing environment.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Required: Knowledge or professional experience with garage doors and garage door components.
  • Experience in product development, manufacturing engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as SAP or Frontier preferred.
  • Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or CATIA preferred.
  • Lean Manufacturing or continuous improvement experience preferred.

Essential Physical Functions

Frequent trips into production areas may be required. The employee must be able to safely maneuver through manufacturing areas and may occasionally be required to stand, walk, reach, bend, or lift materials as needed.

Travel Requirements

Approximately 20% travel is expected, including travel to Hörmann facilities, suppliers, customers, trade shows, and other locations as required.

Equipment / Software Used

The candidate may use a variety of precision measuring devices, manufacturing equipment, and computer-based software including SAP, Frontier, Microsoft Office, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA, and other engineering or manufacturing software as required.
