What does an entry level software engineer do?

An entry level software engineer is responsible for assisting in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software applications. They typically work under the guidance of more experienced engineers and may write code, debug programs, and participate in code reviews. The role often involves learning company-specific tools and workflows, collaborating with team members, and continuously improving technical skills. Entry level software engineers are expected to adapt quickly, communicate effectively, and contribute to the team's overall goals.

What does an entry level software engineer do?

An Entry-Level Software Engineer, also called a Junior Engineer, works with a team of mid-level and senior engineers to develop, test, and maintain software applications and programs. The job duties of Junior Software Engineers typically include relatively simple routine tasks, such as debugging, testing, and code documentation. These tasks hone a Junior Engineer’s skills and familiarize them with the company’s code base. As Software Engineers gain more years of experience, they work on more complex development projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), computer science fundamentals, and often a relevant bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, development frameworks, and basic software development tools is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective collaboration are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial for building reliable software, adapting to evolving technologies, and contributing productively to team projects.

What types of projects do entry level software engineers typically work on, and how do they collaborate with other team members?

Entry level software engineers often start by working on smaller features, bug fixes, or assisting with testing and documentation within larger projects. They usually collaborate closely with senior engineers, product managers, and QA teams through code reviews, daily stand-ups, and pair programming sessions. This structure helps new engineers learn best practices, understand the codebase, and gradually take on more complex assignments. Effective communication and a willingness to learn are key to success in these collaborative environments.

Why join our team?
We strive to provide the best customer experience in the industry and have succeeded with a single, strong motivating principle: We serve our user community.
Our success and growth are directly attributed to our people. Our newly named company is dedicated to fostering a culture of integrity, respect, and continuous personal development. We maintain an entrepreneurial spirit, where creativity, innovative problem-solving, and learning agility drive our day-to-day actions.
What you will be doing:
This position is responsible for the deployment, configuration, and support of ERP integrations between Illumia's Payments software and client systems. This role owns assigned implementation projects end-to-end, managing configuration, testing, and client coordination while working within established integration patterns and frameworks. This is an entry-level role designed to build technical depth and delivery experience, with a clear path to grow into a fully independent Integration Engineer.
Who you will work with:
  • Global Services (Project Managers, Implementation Consultants, Integration Engineers)
  • Client stakeholders (IT, Finance, ERP teams and vendors)
  • Internal teams including Engineering, Support, and Sales
Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Install, configure, and maintain ERP interface software connecting Payments solutions to client systems across supported platforms (e.g., Ellucian, PeopleSoft, Workday,Oracle)
  • Design and implement standard integration configurations and electronic billing templates
  • Perform troubleshooting and debugging of integrations and client configurations across established ERP platforms and implementation patterns
  • Conduct user acceptance testing (UAT) for integrations, enhancements, and fixes
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to support implementation and ensure successful project delivery
  • Actively participate in project calls, technical reviews, and client discussions to support delivery activities

These functions are the fundamental job duties required for successful performance.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions unless such accommodations impose an undue hardship on the organization.
This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities. Duties may be added, removed, or modified at any time in accordance with business needs and applicable law.
What is good to know:
  • 25% travel as needed - Further advancement will require travel up to 50%

Competencies and Behaviors
  • Humble: Shares knowledge, collaborates effectively, and contributes to team success. The right leaders for Illumia don't need to own the spotlight - they share credit, define success collectively, and are quick to elevate the contributions of others. This is a company that still writes its story. The leaders who thrive here find energy in building something together, not in being recognized as the smartest person in the room.
  • Hungry: Demonstrates initiative, curiosity, and a drive to learn and improve. We are not looking for caretakers. We are looking for leaders who are restless about what's possible, self-motivated to close the gap between where we are today and where we need to be, and who are already thinking about the next opportunity before anyone asks.
  • Smart: Builds strong working relationships and communicates effectively across teams and clients. At Illumia, our leaders must operate across a complex, distributed organization spanning multiple product lines, two legacy cultures, and thousands of customers with competing priorities. Technical skills matter, but the ability to read a room, build trust across functions, and bring people along is what separates a great leader from one who burns the organization out.

This position is classified as Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and applicable state wage-and-hour laws.
What you get when you join our team:
  • Flexible time off to include paid holidays and volunteer time.
  • Robust health, dental, and vision insurance plans on your first day of employment
  • Employer-paid life insurance/AD&D/short-term and long-term disability insurance
  • Comprehensive employee assistance program (EAP)
  • Flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA)
  • Matched 401(k)
  • Employee stock purchase plan

Base salary offers for this position may vary based on factors such as location, skills, and relevant experience. Some positions may include additional compensation in the form of bonus, equity, or commissions.
