How much do entry level software engineer internship jobs pay per hour?
What is an entry level software engineer internship?
An Entry Level Software Engineer Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in software development. Interns typically work under the guidance of experienced engineers, assisting with coding, debugging, testing, and documentation. This role helps build technical skills, familiarity with industry tools, and teamwork experience. It can also serve as a pathway to full-time employment.
What types of projects do entry level software engineer interns typically work on during their internships?
Entry Level Software Engineer Interns often contribute to real-world projects under the mentorship of senior engineers, which might include bug fixes, feature enhancements, or developing new application components. You may participate in code reviews, collaborate in agile development sprints, and help with software testing or documentation. The projects are designed to match your skill level while also providing hands-on learning and exposure to industry-standard development processes. This experience helps interns build a strong foundation for future full-time roles and understand how software teams operate in a professional environment.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the entry level software engineer internship position, and why are they important?
To thrive as an Entry Level Software Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals (such as data structures, algorithms, and basic coding), often demonstrated through coursework or personal projects. Familiarity with development tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and commonly used languages (like Python, Java, or JavaScript) is typically required, and exposure to version control systems is valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, teamwork, and effective communication are important soft skills to stand out in this role. These combined skills enable interns to quickly contribute to projects, collaborate productively with experienced engineers, and gain the most from their internship experience.

Our team solves tough, meaningful problems that create a safer, more secure world.
The Space & Airborne Center within Systems Engineering/Integration & Test is seeking talented System Integration & Test II - Electronic Warfare Engineers to support our advanced airborne and space-based programs. Our team is responsible for integrating hardware and software, developing test plans and procedures, debugging, and evaluating system functions and interfaces, and verifying system requirements in support of final customer sell-off.
We build systems end-to-end, exercising them in the lab and in the field, analyzing performance, and ensuring they work the first time and every time. The work brings daily technical challenges and requires collaboration across engineering disciplines to deliver effective solutions. In this role, you'll gain broad insight into the entire system and play a direct part in making it all work together through integration and test efforts.
As a System Integration & Test II - Electronic Warfare Engineer within the Space & Airborne lifecycle center, you will interface with customers to develop CONOPS, system architectures, and system requirements, and manage qualification, verification, and validation activities. You will perform functional and physical analyses, requirements allocation, and trade studies while helping transition systems from production through warranty, sustainment, and long-term support.
You will also contribute across the product lifecycle, including radar mode requirement development, engineering testing, integration and flight-testing, production, deployment, and post-deployment sustainment. Digital Transformation (DTx) methods, including MBSE and Agile, enable these activities and support our modern engineering approach. This is an onsite role in Goleta, California.

- Provide technical guidance to IPTLs and participate in team meetings, teleconferences, and working groups.
- Implement process requirements and contribute to mockup hardware repair activities, sustainment tasks, and Depot return/repair efforts.
What You Will Learn:
- After completion of comprehensive on-the-job training, the candidate will be a part of a team supporting Systems Engineering, Systems Integration & Test activities across the product development lifecycle.
Qualifications You Must Have:
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline (preferably Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering or Physics) and a minimum of 2 years of prior relevant experience with Electronic Warfare, Radar systems integration, verification, and validation
- Experience with troubleshooting technical issues with electronics in an academic or internship setting, including the use of common commercial test equipment (oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, etc.)
- Active and transferable U.S. government issued Secret security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Experience preparing system/subsystem test documentation (e.g., plans, procedures, and reports) for Electronic Warfare and Radar system test
- Experience troubleshooting, testing, and integrating EW/Radar system test equipment
- Modeling the performance of EW/Radar systems
- Millimeter and microwave RF at both the system and module levels
- Integration of mixed signal modules into the next higher assembly
