ABOUT US The Industrial Sewing and Innovation Center (ISAIC) is a Detroit-based national nonprofit institute for innovation and skilling in the advanced manufacturing of apparel and textiles. We inspire and equip the industry with the confidence to adopt new technologies and skills by developing innovative manufacturing methods that enhance efficiency, promote sustainability, and establish human-centric industry standards that elevate people.


POSITION SUMMARY The Sewing Specialist is responsible for the precision assembly and stitching of fabric components to create high-quality garments and products. This role requires expert knowledge of sewing techniques, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of fabric types and machine operations. The Sewing Specialist will collaborate closely with the design and production teams to ensure that finished products meet company standards and specifications.

Requirements:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Sew and assemble various garments, prototypes, and samples using industrial and specialty sewing machines, including but not limited to overlock, lockstitch, and cover stitch machines
  • Inspect and verify that finished products conform to company standards, checking for accurate stitching, seams, and measurements. Identify defects and take corrective actions as needed
  • Read and interpret sewing patterns, production drawings, and technical specifications to produce garments that meet the intended design
  • Perform routine maintenance on sewing machines and equipment, including threading, tension adjustments, and needle replacements. Troubleshoot any mechanical issues and report repairs as necessary
  • Meet production goals and maintain consistent sewing speeds while ensuring precision and quality of work
  • Work closely with the team leaders and production teams to resolve sewing-related issues, suggest improvements, and ensure the manufacturability of products
  • Other duties as assigned by management

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representational of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols in the sewing room
  • Proficiency in using various industrial sewing machines (e.g., single-needle, Serger, cover stitch, blind stitch, bar tack).
  • Knowledge of sewing techniques such as topstitching, hemming, and seam finishing
  • Familiarity with sewing tools and accessories, including scissors, measuring tapes, and seam rippers
  • Ability to sew with high precision and accuracy, maintaining consistent quality standards
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with team members and provide and receive feedback

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time

  • Must be able to lift to 25 pounds at times as needed
  • The Sewing Specialist will work in a production or workshop environment, often with loud machinery noise. The role requires attention to safety and compliance with health and safety standard

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS


Compensation: $15-$22 per hour (based on competency level + performance-based incentives)
