The Position
The City of Riverside, Mayor's Office, is currently accepting applications for the position of Communications Intern* to fill one (1) vacancy. The eligibility list established from this recruitment may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.
Communications interns in the Office of the Mayor for the City of Riverside will join a team of individuals who are valued for their unique perspective, encouraged to share their opinion, and pushed to develop their skills.
Under general supervision, the Communications Intern will perform entry level administrative duties in a professional environment, assist in a wide variety of tasks and research projects, and complete related work as required.
*Communications Intern is a working title; the actual job classification being utilized is .
Work Performed
When assigned to the Mayor's Office, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Animation with online software
  • Audience analysis with an emphasis on inclusivity and diversity of voice
  • Social media content development, including content writing, planning and implementation
  • Assistance with development of communications and social media calendar
  • Writing talking points for events and scripts for video and interviews
  • Staffing events with the Mayor or Mayor's staff, taking photos and interacting with community members
  • Ongoing strategic analysis of communications needs
  • Captioning, editing, and uploading videos to social media and other online platforms
  • Website review and maintenance using a content management system
  • Environmental scanning and research for content and talking points
  • Occasional press release writing
  • Additional non-communications related tasks as required

Qualifications
Education:
Current enrollment in college courses; or
Completion within the last five years of, an undergraduate degree studying public or business administration or a related field.
Experience: None required
Highly Desired Qualifications:
  • Social Media Management (in either a paid position, or in a volunteer/unpaid capacity)
  • Working knowledge of digital editing tools such as Canva and CapCut

Temporary Variable & Full-Time
Employees hired in a temporary position working "variable" part-time hours (less than 30 hrs/week) may be eligible to enroll in a health insurance plan offered by the City upon meeting full-time eligibility at the end of their measurement period (12 months). Employees hired in a temporary full-time (more than 30 hrs/week) position will be eligible to enroll in a health insurance plan offered by the City upon hire.
All temporary employees are automatically enrolled in a mandatory Deferred Compensation plan in lieu of Social Security. Temporary employees are also eligible for paid sick leave as outlined in the Fringe Benefits and Salary Plan, Section 7. Employees may be eligible for CalPERS membership upon hire if they are already a CalPERS member, Tier designation is based on membership date. If no prior CalPERS membership exists, employees must meet CalPERS eligibility requirements before being brought into CalPERS membership.
