About the Position: This is a time limited position. The Clinical Nurse Abstractor reviews and abstracts detailed medical, hospital, emergency medical services, and related records for child death cases; verifies data accuracy and completeness across multiple data systems; and prepares clinical case summaries for multidisciplinary Child Death Review team meetings. The position coordinates with medical examiners, coroners, hospitals, law enforcement, child welfare, and other partners to obtain records and clarify clinical findings. Responsibilities include applying standardized abstraction protocols, interpreting clinical findings and causes of death, identifying contributing medical and environmental factors, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and entering and maintaining data in state and national child death review systems. The position also supports quality assurance activities, responds to data requests, assists with case tracking and reporting, and provides clinical input to program leadership and prevention initiatives as needed.
What you'll need to be Successful: Knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, and clinical standards related to maternal, infant, and child health. Ability to identify patterns, contributing factors, and inconsistencies in clinical records and ability to relay findings clearly through verbal and written modalities.
Preferred Qualifications: Typically requires state licensure as a Registered Nurse and 2+ years of experience as a Registered Nurse. Hiring agency prefers:Experience reviewing, interpreting, and abstracting information from complex medical records, including hospital, EMS, autopsy, and coroner records. Experience working with confidential, sensitive, or legally protected data. Experience using electronic health records (Epic preferred) and data abstraction or surveillance systems.
