What does an entry level RF filter design engineer do?

An Entry Level RF Filter Design Engineer assists in designing and testing radio frequency (RF) filters used in wireless communication systems. Their responsibilities include supporting senior engineers in developing filter prototypes, performing simulations, and analyzing test results to ensure the filters meet required specifications. They also help with documentation, troubleshooting, and collaborating with other engineering teams. This role is ideal for recent graduates with a background in electrical engineering and a strong interest in RF technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level RF filter design engineer?

To thrive as an Entry Level RF Filter Design Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, especially RF and microwave theory, typically supported by a related bachelor's degree. Familiarity with simulation tools like ADS (Advanced Design System) or HFSS, and experience with network analyzers and PCB design software, are commonly required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for this role. These qualifications ensure the engineer can design, test, and optimize high-performance RF filters that meet specific technical requirements in communications and electronics industries.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level RF filter design engineers, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level RF Filter Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as understanding complex filter topologies, meeting stringent performance specifications, and learning specialized simulation tools. Additionally, translating theoretical designs into manufacturable products can be demanding due to real-world constraints like component tolerances and PCB layout limitations. To overcome these hurdles, new engineers benefit from seeking mentorship, actively participating in team design reviews, and dedicating time to hands-on prototyping and testing. Collaboration with manufacturing and test engineering teams also helps build a practical understanding that complements theoretical knowledge.

pSemi Corporation is a Murata company driving semiconductor integration. pSemi builds on Peregrine Semiconductorโ€™s 30-year legacy of technology advancements and strong IP portfolio but with a new missionโ€”to enhance Murataโ€™s world-class capabilities with high-performance semiconductors. With a strong foundation in RF integration, pSemiโ€™s product portfolio now spans power management, connected sensors, optical transceivers, antenna tuning and RF frontends. These intelligent and efficient semiconductors enable advanced modules for smartphones, base stations, personal computers, electric vehicles, data centers, IoT devices and healthcare. From headquarters in San Diego and offices around the world, pSemiโ€™s team explores new ways to make electronics for the connected world smaller, thinner, faster and better.

Job Summary

The Device Development and Modeling Engineer will be a member of the team responsible for the characterization and modeling of pSemi's patented high-performance UltraCMOSโ„ข process technology. This is a hands-on R&D position that combines laboratory-based device characterization, data analysis, and semiconductor device modeling.

The successful candidate will work closely with device, modeling, process, and design engineers to generate high-quality measurement data, investigate device behavior, support technology development activities, and contribute to model extraction and validation. This role offers the opportunity to gain extensive experience with advanced semiconductor measurement techniques, RF device characterization, and next-generation device development in a collaborative research and development environment.

This position has responsibility for:
  • Design and execute characterization plans for semiconductor devices using advanced wafer-level DC and RF measurement systems.
  • Perform hands-on laboratory measurements and data collection to support device development, technology characterization, and model generation activities.
  • Analyze characterization data to investigate device behavior, identify performance trends, and understand non-ideal or non-classical effects.
  • Collaborate with device, process, modeling, and circuit design engineers to evaluate new technologies and resolve technical challenges.
  • Develop and maintain measurement automation scripts and data analysis tools to improve testing efficiency and data quality.
  • Support the specification, evaluation, and implementation of advanced characterization equipment and measurement methodologies.
  • Troubleshoot measurement systems, test structures, and experimental setups to support root-cause analysis of technical issues.
  • Contribute to device development, model validation and model extraction activities through data review and statistical analysis.
  • Capable to perform basic model extraction of passive and\or active devices.
  • Document experimental procedures, measurement methodologies, and technical findings through reports, presentations, and internal knowledge-sharing resources.
  • Maintain device and modeling documentation and support updates to internal technical databases and websites.
Minimum Qualifications (Experience and Skills)
