Entry Level Remote Electrical Engineering information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level remote electrical engineer?

To thrive as an Entry Level Remote Electrical Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, a relevant bachelor's degree, and basic experience with circuit design and analysis. Familiarity with CAD software (like AutoCAD or Altium), simulation tools (such as MATLAB or LTspice), and remote collaboration platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, clear written communication, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for working independently and with distributed teams. These skills and tools are crucial for delivering quality engineering solutions efficiently and effectively in a remote work environment.

What is an entry level remote electrical engineering job?

An entry level remote electrical engineering job is a position for recent graduates or those new to the field, where engineers work from a remote location—such as their home—rather than a traditional office or lab. These roles typically involve tasks like assisting with circuit design, CAD drafting, testing, documentation, and collaborating with teams online. Entry level remote electrical engineers may support senior engineers on projects in industries such as energy, telecommunications, electronics, or manufacturing. They use digital tools and video conferencing to communicate and contribute to engineering projects. This setup allows flexibility but also requires good self-management and communication skills.

How does an entry level remote electrical engineer typically collaborate with team members and senior engineers?

As an entry-level remote electrical engineer, you will frequently use digital collaboration tools such as video conferencing, project management software, and cloud-based design platforms to interact with your team. Regular check-in meetings, virtual code/design reviews, and shared project documentation help ensure alignment and continuous feedback from senior engineers. It's important to be proactive in communication and ask questions, as remote settings often require more initiative to stay connected and supported. While you may work independently on certain tasks, you'll often collaborate on larger projects, troubleshooting, and documentation to contribute effectively to team goals.

This role is intended for a strong mid-level engineer who can execute assigned engineering deliverables with limited supervision while collaborating directly with clients, utilities, vendors, and multidisciplinary project teams.

Salary Range: $90,000 - $120,000 / year

The salary range above is based upon the Denver, Colorado labor market.

This opportunity is available to full-time remote candidates. Periodic travel is expected for client meetings, site visits, field investigations, commissioning, and project support.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Perform electrical engineering and design activities for industrial, utility, and oil & gas facilities, including medium-voltage and low-voltage power distribution systems.
  • Prepare computer-based models and perform power system studies using ETAP, SKM, PSS/E, PSCAD, or similar software, including short circuit, load flow, protective device coordination, arc flash, motor starting, harmonic analysis, and related studies.
  • Develop and maintain power system models, validate study results using engineering judgment, and prepare clear technical reports and recommendations for clients and project teams.
  • Support medium and high voltage T&D projects, including overhead and underground distribution systems, utility coordination, distribution upgrades, transmission studies, and construction package development.
  • Support substation, relay, and protection-related engineering activities, including relay coordination, protective relay settings, and control and relaying schematics under the direction of senior engineers.
  • Develop electrical deliverables such as one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, control schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment specifications, calculations, studies, RFIs, and construction packages.
  • Coordinate directly with clients, utilities, vendors, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to support project execution and resolve technical issues.
  • Participate in client meetings, communicate technical findings, document action items, and support engineering decisions through clear written and verbal communication.
  • Support projects from preliminary design through detailed design, including 30%, 60%, 90%, and issued-for-construction deliverables with oversight from senior engineering staff.
  • Provide field assistance, troubleshooting, startup support, and commissioning support as required.
  • Check the work of designers, drafters, and field personnel for general quality and accuracy as required.
  • Understand and apply applicable codes, standards, and client requirements such as NEC, NESC, IEEE, NFPA 70E, and utility standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.
