SJS Industrial, a veteran owned media blasting, industrial painting, powder coating, and light fabrication shop in Virginia Beach, VA, that serves military and maritime customers, is seeking a full-time Quality Control Technician to work Monday through Friday from 2nd Shift, 12:30 PM to 9 PM. Each 8-hour shift also includes a 30-minute unpaid meal break. Position will start on 1st shift and move to 2nd shift once training is complete.

Saturday or evening shifts might happen occasionally if there is a special project with a tight deadline, but the goal is a steady and reliable Monday through Friday 40-hour work week to avoid weekend, and overtime work.


Pay is based on experience, and expected to range from $20 - $23/hr. There is also a variety of benefits SJS offers just as 80/hrs PTO, medical, dental, vision, 7 paid federal holidays and 2 floating holidays.

The ideal candidate for this job is super detail oriented and has an entry level experience with the administration, documentation, and maintenance of a company’s Quality Management System (QMS); understands how to achieve standardization and defect elimination within blasting/wet paint/powder coating operations; has experience in management and administration of a company’s non-destructive testing (NDT) program; and knows how to manage time effectively to plan and coordinate resources and Quality Control activities.

The ideal candidate is also calm, diplomatic, and able to converse politely with team members in a constructive and positive way about how to remedy defects, implement corrective actions, and solve issues.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinates with the Quality Control Supervisor and the Production Engineer to establish the weekly schedule for inspecting processed components
  • Reviews job packages, traveler forms, and technical drawings to understand customer specifications and requirements for inspection, including material type requirements.
  • Reviews customer purchase orders, traveler forms, etc. to verify all customer requirements are met in terms of color, texture, mil thickness, coverage, packaging, etc.
  • Performs in-process and final inspections of processed material
  • Utilizes gages and measurement equipment to confirm the compliance of components/parts, such as gauging coatings thickness
  • Maintains calibration standards and calibration cycle for measurement tools
  • Ensures documentation required by each job/project is complete, properly reviewed, and in compliance with changes/revisions, if any
  • Inspects subcontracted components/parts upon receipt for conformance to drawing specifications and purchase requirements
  • Navy Basic Paint Inspector/SSPC QAS - responsible for inspection and documentation for DOD and commercial paint requirements
  • Instrumental in tracking non-conforming product and maintaining defect free delivery of product to customers
  • Instrumental in tracking corrective actions to completion and composing the affiliated paperwork
  • Performs root cause analysis to pinpoint the cause or causes of defects; proposes solutions for defect elimination and avoidance
  • Maintains communications with the QC Supervisor to ensure that all projects are on schedule to each subcontract provider or to each end customer; proactively notices and notifies supervisor of potential delays before items are late to customers
  • Participates in routine management meetings to provide leadership with insight on QC department trends, patterns, and results; may be called upon to compose short summary reports or slides to help inform management about the status of the QC department
  • Performs other quality management related duties as assigned by the Quality Control Supervisor or the Production Engineer.

Qualifications:

  • 6 months of relevant career experience working in one or more Quality Control departments; Quality Control experience accrued working for coatings operations (paint, powder, ceramic coat, etc.) is preferred
  • Working knowledge of coatings-related Quality Assurance (QA) standards, coatings product datasheets, and the proper function and use of calibrated inspection equipment to measure coating thickness and coverage.
  • Must have Microsoft Office suite software experience
  • Must pass drug test and background check.
