What Does an Entry Level Python Developer Do?

The job of an entry-level Python developer is to assist senior developers or project managers by writing code in the Python programming or scripting language. Their responsibilities are to help develop application software and run QA tests and debugging tools. Many developers work within a particular type of workflow method, such as Agile Scrum, and an entry-level python developer should have some knowledge of how these workflows operate. The qualifications you need to become an entry-level Python developer are a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a relevant field as well as skills using the scripting language or working with code.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Python Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Python Developer, you need a solid understanding of Python programming fundamentals, problem-solving skills, and a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic database management, and frameworks such as Django or Flask is typically expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork abilities help you stand out in collaborative development environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficient code development, adaptability to new technologies, and successful project delivery.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level Python developers during their first year on the job?

Entry level Python developers often encounter challenges such as adapting to real-world codebases, understanding version control systems like Git, and collaborating effectively within a development team. Additionally, they may need to quickly learn industry-standard frameworks and tools that go beyond basic Python knowledge, such as Django, Flask, or RESTful APIs. Regular communication with senior developers and participating in code reviews are crucial for skill development and overcoming initial hurdles.

Will AI replace Python devs?

Entry level Python developers are unlikely to be fully replaced by AI, as programming requires problem-solving, creativity, and understanding of complex systems that AI currently cannot fully replicate. AI tools can assist developers by automating repetitive tasks and improving productivity, but human oversight and expertise remain essential for designing, debugging, and maintaining software. Developing skills in AI and machine learning can enhance a Python developer's value in the evolving tech landscape.

Job description

Job Summary:

The Software Development Engineer role on our Trading & Risk Management Systems (TRMS) team focuses on designing, implementing, and maintaining software components that support financial risk analytics and reporting. You will contribute to applications and services that process market, position, and reference data and help enable risk calculations such as sensitivities/Greeks, VaR, PFE, and XVA.

This role emphasizes continuous learning, collaboration across product, quant, and engineering teams, and disciplined software engineering practices. As you grow in the role, you will take on more design responsibilities, improve system components, and influence best practices. Successful engineers demonstrate strong problem-solving ability, clear communication, solid coding habits, and a collaborative team mindset.

Responsibilities:

Develop, enhance, and maintain software applications and services used in risk workflows and data processing.

Collaborate with product managers, quants, and engineering peers to clarify requirements and translate them into functioning code.

Participate in design discussions and propose improvements that support scalability, performance, and maintainability.

Build and maintain integrations and pipelines for trade, position, and market data.

Write unit and integration tests and contribute to overall code quality and reliability.

Perform troubleshooting and root-cause analysis to resolve defects and improve system stability.

Assist in story creation, effort estimation, and delivery planning within an Agile environment.

Document implementation details, design decisions, and APIs to support knowledge sharing and maintainability.

Support CI/CD processes, build pipelines, and release activities.

Required Skills:

Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented programming.

Proficiency in Python or another modern object-oriented language (Java, C#, C++, etc.).

Ability to learn quickly and apply new concepts in data-driven or computational problem spaces.

Exposure to or basic experience with APIs, microservices, or backend service development.

Familiarity with version control tools such as Git and comfort participating in code reviews.

Solid analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

Good written and verbal communication skills; ability to work effectively with cross-functional partners.

Interest in financial markets or risk management concepts is a plus but not required-domain training is provided.

Experience with automated testing, CI/CD workflows, or cloud environments is a plus, not a must.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field-or equivalent practical experience.

2+ years of professional software development experience (financial services experience is a bonus, not a requirement).

Experience working on data-intensive, distributed, or mission-critical systems is a plus but not expected at entry level.
