Job description

Job Summary
The Engineering Technician provides technical engineering and data management support for disaster recovery, infrastructure restoration, and reconstruction projects for a federal agency. This position supports active and planned engineering projects through design development, drafting, database management, geospatial analysis, and engineering documentation.
Supervisory Responsibilities: No
Job Classification: Permanent; Full time, Non Exempt
Duty Station: Asheville, NC
Travel: Travel up to 75% (Travel required throughout the National Forests in North Carolina)
Duration: This role is anticipated to last 6 months, with the possibility of extension pending contract options.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Prepare engineering designs, technical drawings, construction plans, specifications, and supporting documentation for complex reconstruction and restoration projects.

  • Develop engineering representations and design packages for damaged or destroyed infrastructure supporting disaster recovery efforts.

  • Assist with planning, designing, and evaluating engineering solutions to improve the resilience, functionality, and sustainability of constructed features.

  • Coordinate engineering studies, field investigations, testing, and modeling activities to evaluate design feasibility and project performance.

  • Perform CAD drafting and graphical development using engineering software to support project planning and construction documentation.

  • Maintain project databases, engineering records, and data management systems to ensure accurate project tracking and documentation.

  • Gather, organize, and maintain engineering records, corporate documentation, survey information, and project files.

  • Conduct multi-scale and multi-resource technical studies supporting planning, investigation, monitoring, and disaster recovery initiatives.

  • Develop and utilize scripting languages and automated workflows to improve engineering analyses, data management, and project reporting.

  • Assist with surveying, mapping, measurements, and field data collection activities.

  • Coordinate with U.S. Forest Service personnel and project teams to resolve technical design issues and ensure project compatibility with existing infrastructure.

  • Prepare technical reports, engineering summaries, exhibits, and project documentation.

  • Support quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) efforts for engineering documents, drawings, and project deliverables.

  • Maintain compliance with applicable federal engineering standards, agency policies, environmental regulations, and safety requirements.

Required Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of engineering principles, construction methods, and infrastructure restoration practices.

  • Experience preparing engineering drawings, plans, specifications, and technical documentation.

  • Proficiency with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software such as AutoCAD or Civil 3D.

  • Experience with database management and engineering data organization.

  • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret technical, engineering, and survey data.

  • Familiarity with GIS applications and spatial data management is preferred.

  • Experience using scripting languages (such as Python, SQL, or similar) to automate engineering or data management tasks is preferred.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple assignments while maintaining attention to detail.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams

Education and Experience
  • Required: Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Surveying, Construction Management, Geographic Information Systems, or a related technical field

  • Required: Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience supporting engineering, drafting, surveying, construction, or infrastructure projects

Physical Requirements
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.

  • Ability to work in both office and outdoor environments.

  • Ability to walk over uneven terrain and active construction or project sites.

  • Ability to lift and carry equipment, plans, or project materials weighing up to 30 pounds

  • Valid driver's license with the ability to travel to project locations.
