Job Summary
Perform daily hands-on facility operations at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center. Supervise, lead, and instruct laborers, on-call non-regular temporary and/or volunteer employees while performing related duties. Engage in a variety of assignments under the general direction of the Sports Center Manager.
Essential Duties
  • Perform general custodial duties to include but not limited to sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping floors, emptying trash, cleaning windows and rink glass, washing walls, and cleaning restrooms.
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, parking areas, and driveways by shoveling, salting, sanding, and operating a truck mounted snowplow or skid steer.
  • Prepare the ice sheet for users using a mechanically operated ice resurfacer.
  • Prepare various areas of the facility for different programming and facility uses by the public including event equipment set-up such as stage, pipe & drape, tables chairs, and audio-visual.
  • Assist in servicing and maintaining the facility, equipment and machines painting and various projects as directed.
  • Provide a safe and clean environment throughout the facility for patrons, staff and organizations.
  • Perform general grounds maintenance to include but not limited to mowing and trimming lawns, bushes, and trees.
  • Provide proper care and maintenance of indoor turf field, track, arena, meeting rooms, and all other areas of the facility while operating a variety of tools-equipment.
  • Perform basic administrative functions such as answer phones, customer interaction, customer service, and operating a Point-of-Sale system (P.O.S) with cash register.
  • Complete Open and Closing building procedures without direct supervision.
  • Provide direction and assistance to Sports Center Facility Crew Members (on-call).
  • Observe and enforce all rules and regulations of the facility and City of Wasilla policies and code.
  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowlege, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of ice resurfacing equipment and rink maintenance.
  • Knowledge in the methods and techniques used in the general maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Ability to make change, operate a cash register, read schedules, answer phone, and answer questions from the public.
  • Ability to multi-task in a multi-faceted sports and event center while being acute with time schedules.
  • Some knowledge of the hazards and safety practices associated with the operation of an ice arena, indoor turf field and event center.
  • Ability to operate and acquire needed certification(s) to use equipment and tools in a skilled and safe manner including but not limited to forklift, manlift, Bobcat, snowplow, and other equipment.
  • Ability to perform the various custodial tasks associated with the care and cleaning of buildings.
  • Ability to use independent judgment without direct supervision.
  • Ability to tactfully and courteously communicate and work effectively with the public of all ages, staff, patrons, volunteers, organizations and management while using problem solving skills and solving potential complications or complaints.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Possess all necessary licenses and certifications to perform duties and willingness to learn other applications as assigned.

Experience, Education Certificates, and Licenses
Experience and/or Education:
  • High school graduate, GED or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience associated with the operation of a multi-use sports complex, ice arena, event center or similar facility and two years of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity. Applicable education, training, course work, seminars and/or on the job training may substitute for the one year of the required operational experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Must possess a valid driver's license at time of application and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must provide a current (dated within 30 days of request) driving record from the state in which driver's license is held.
  • Must obtain a valid State of Alaska Driver's License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
  • Must obtain in-house or industry certifications before operating on-site equipment.

The City of Wasilla offers a comprehensive benefit package of retirement, health and life insurance, including paid leave. Voluntary supplemental benefits are also available through payroll deduction. Please see the information below for more information.
  • Retirement is provided through the State of Alaska PERS (Public Employee's Retirement System). Employees who first became members on or after July 1, 2006 participate in PERS Tier IV, the Defined Contribution Plan. Participation in PERS is mandatory and the current contribution rate is 8% of gross wages. Defined Benefit (Tier I, II, III) current contribution rate is 6.75% of gross wages. Employees in this Defined Benefit are eligible to participate in the Voluntary Savings Account. The City of Wasilla matches 5% of employee contributions for Tier IV employees and a 22% Cost Share for Tier I-III employees. Upon reaching 5 years of employment with the City of Wasilla, an employee will become fully vested.

  • State of Alaska Supplemental Benefit System (SBS) annuity plan is provided in lieu of Federal Social Security (deductions for Medicare will still be required). Participation in this program is mandatory. The current employee contribution is 6.13% of gross wages and is matched by the City.   • Health insurance is provided through Blue Cross Blue Shield. Monthly premiums are paid by the city, with employees contributing $39 per month toward the cost of coverage. The deductible for individual/family coverage is $300/$600, and the out-of-pocket maximum is $2,300/$4,600. The maximum out-of-pocket cost for prescription drugs is $4,300 per person and $8,600 per family. The plan deductible follows the fiscal year, from July 1 through June 30.
  • Important: There is a one-month gap between the month an employee becomes eligible, and the month coverage begins. Health insurance coverage does not begin the month immediately following the employee's hire date.
  • For example, regardless of the date an employee is hired in July, health insurance coverage will begin September 1. An employee hired on July 1, July 15, or July 31 will have the same coverage effective date of September 1. Therefore, an employee hired in July will not have health insurance coverage beginning August 1. Plan benefits, premium contributions, and employee costs are subject to change.
    Life insurance is provided through Symetra Life Insurance Company at no cost to eligible employees. Employees receive $50,000 in life insurance coverage. Eligible dependents are also covered, with $2,000 in life insurance for an eligible spouse and $1,000 for each eligible child. Coverage begins on the first day of the month following 30 days of continuous employment. This is a portable policy, allowing employees to continue coverage after separation from employment by assuming responsibility for the premium payments.

  • Employees with 0-3 years of service with the City of Wasilla will accrue 144 hours/year (12 hours/month).

  • 11 paid holidays.

  • Union 341 employees receive an additional floating holiday (must be used within fiscal year and cannot be cashed out).

  • Worked holidays are paid at time and one-half in addition to straight time.

  • Holidays that fall on a regularly scheduled day off may be banked.
