Job description

Apex Companies is seeking an entry-level Scientist 1 to support water quality, environmental sampling, and regulatory compliance projects in and around Gillette, WY. This is a field-oriented role supporting groundwater and surface water sampling, construction and industrial site inspections, laboratory coordination, data review, and client/landowner communication. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, organized, comfortable working outdoors, and interested in developing a broad technical foundation in environmental consulting. 

Your Responsibilities as a Scientist 1:

  • Actively participate in Apex's culture of safe work practices.  
  • Conduct groundwater, surface water, soil, soil gas, and air sampling.  
  • Coordinate laboratory activities, including sample handling, chain-of-custody documentation, and preliminary data review.  
  • Conduct compliance inspections at construction and industrial sites.  
  • Support inspections related to SPCC Plans, SWMPs, and SWPPPs.  
  • Properly maintain, transport, and use field equipment.  
  • Compile, review, and enter field and analytical data into report templates.  
  • Coordinate with clients, landowners, subcontractors, laboratories, and project managers before and during field assignments.  
  • Communicate workload, schedule constraints, safety observations, and project updates to supervisors and project teams. 

What we're looking for:

  • BS degree in environmental science, geology, hydrogeology, biology, engineering technology, or a related field.  
  • Open to an entry level candidate as well as candidates with experience environmental field sampling, inspection, or data collection experience.  
  • Strong technical writing, communication, organization, and scheduling skills.  
  • Ability to work independently with remote supervision and coordinate effectively with a project team.  
  • Ability to lift and carry field equipment and samples up to 70 pounds, work outdoors in variable weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, and safely load/unload equipment.  
  • Willingness to travel to remote project sites and support adjusted work schedules, including periodic weekend and after-hours assignments.  
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate a company vehicle during working hours.  
  • Ability to pass required drug and alcohol screening.  
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • PEC SafeLand, 40-hour HAZWOPER, or similar safety training.  
  • Familiarity with water chemistry, lab reporting, stormwater controls, reclamation, Phase I/II ESAs, SWPPPs, SPCC plans, and oil/gas operations.
