Entry Level Programmer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Programmer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and at least one programming language, often demonstrated by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic database management, and development environments is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with team members and learn quickly. These skills are crucial for successfully building, testing, and maintaining software while adapting to evolving project requirements.

What are entry level programmers?

Entry level programmers are individuals who are just starting their careers in software development. They typically have a basic understanding of programming languages and software development practices, often gained through education or internships. Entry level programmers are usually responsible for writing simple code, fixing bugs, and assisting more experienced developers on projects. Their role is to learn on the job, gain experience, and gradually take on more complex tasks. Employers often look for candidates with problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.

What types of projects and tasks can an entry level programmer typically expect to work on during their first year?

As an entry level programmer, you will often be assigned to support tasks such as debugging code, writing simple scripts, developing small features, and assisting with software testing. You may also update documentation and collaborate with more experienced developers on larger projects. This hands-on experience helps you become familiar with company coding standards, version control systems, and agile development processes while building a foundation for more complex assignments in the future. Teamwork and communication are important, as you’ll regularly interact with other programmers, QA testers, and sometimes project managers.

What is the difference between Entry Level Programmer vs Software Developer?

AspectEntry Level ProgrammerSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsAssociate's degree or coding bootcamp certificationBachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field often preferred
Work EnvironmentEntry-level coding tasks, supervised projectsDesign, develop, and maintain software applications
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, IT departmentsSoftware firms, tech companies, enterprise IT teams

While both roles involve coding and software development, an Entry Level Programmer typically focuses on basic coding tasks under supervision, whereas a Software Developer often handles full project cycles, including design and testing. The roles overlap in skills and industry usage, but the Software Developer position generally requires more experience and responsibility.

What Is an Entry-Level Programmer?

As an entry-level programmer, you use software programming languages to create and maintain applications for in-house, proprietary use or clients. You go through an onboarding process to learn your company’s code base and their processes for software development. You work on a team with other programmers and developers, and your job duties include writing code to develop software according to required specifications, testing and debugging code, creating and rolling out fixes, and publishing finished code to the production server. As you gain experience and your skillset expands, you can take on jobs with more autonomy and responsibility.

Job description

You’re a Civil Engineering Graduate looking for your perfect entry-level role. You want an exciting, hands-on job in the dynamic telecommunications industry. You’re driven to prove yourself and want to put your knowledge to the test in the field. You’re also a thrill-seeker – heights don’t scare you, and neither does working outdoors in the elements. Join us and soar to the top of your engineering career at Teletek Structures (http://teletekstructures.com/home.html) ! We’re an engineering firm that builds and maintains the telecommunications infrastructure that supports major networks like Bell, Rogers and Telus.   The role As our new entry level engineer, you will work as part of our team with experienced Field, Steel Detailers and Engineers team members to complete projects, including inspections on cell tower structures, drafting and steel detailing. You may travel to different sites daily, mainly across Quebec and sometimes to western Canada. You’ll be responsible for two types of inspections: audit inspections and post inspections. You’ll complete inspections from the ground, and from the towers themselves (by climbing up between 100 to 1000 feet). For audits, you’ll perform structural analysis, and for post inspections, you’ll ensure everything is installed per engineering drawings. Then, you’ll take your findings to assemble inspection reports. You’ll use your AutoCAD skills to create basic CAD drawings to illustrate your measured findings.  Your civil engineering education has prepared you for this job, but you’re the right person for this role if:   You’re comfortable working at heights: a big part of your job involves tethered climbing, from 100 feet to maximum of 1000 feet. Heights don’t scare you – you’re an adrenaline junkie who will love the daily adventure.   You enjoy working outdoors: you’ll be working outside, in all types of weather conditions. You’ll enjoy the fresh air, and not being stuck in an office. Ideally, you’ve had some experience working outdoors before.   You’re safety-conscious: working safely matters to you. You’ll take care to follow proper health and safety procedures to ensure your safety.   You’re ambitious: this is an entry-level role where you’ll put in the work to gain as much knowledge as you can about our industry and structures. As you gain experience, you’ll progress to a more senior role. This excites you, because you want to grow your career with us.   In addition to your growth and expertise, you’ll be successful here because you are aligned with TELETEK’s Company values:   Value Growth and Team Resourcefulness:  We all contribute to our team’s success!  You enjoy working collaboratively with the team.  You are resourceful. You are always learning, personally and professionally.  You own your professional development and Teletek support you as an accountability partner.   Respect:  We stay positive.  We treat each other with respect, kindness and celebrate our abilities, strengths and our differences.  We know that respect builds trust and trust builds a collaborative team, partnerships and client relationships.    Innovation and creative ideas.   You’re unafraid to bring new ideas forward, because you’re committed to helping us continue evolving.  Together we find solutions to problems, even for problems that don’t yet exist!   Working at Teletek Structures For more than 20 years, Teletek Structures has built our reputation by providing a personal level of service to our clients, treating them like partners rather than customers. We care about our team in this same way. We’re a friendly group, who work very closely together, and we strive for a low-stress environment.   As part of our brand-new Quebec division, there will be tons of opportunities for professional growth. As you gain experience, and as our company grows, you’ll enjoy the opportunity to train and mentor others.   Working in a small company like ours means you’ll get exposure to many different aspects of the business. You’ll learn quickly here and gain diverse experience. We’re committed to supporting your learning and development and will cover the cost of relevant training and courses.   Working in office Montreal, Quebec or St. Jacob’s, Ontario * Full time permanent position (40h /week) Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm * 2 weeks vacation / year * 5 sick days / year  Qualifications You’re made for this role if you have the following qualifications: * Bilingual Prefered(French and English) * A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited university * Experience working with AutoCAD, professionally or academically * Valid driver’s license for travel to field inspection sites * Experience working with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) at an intermediate level * Desire and ability to obtain working at heights certificate and/or completion of a working at heights certification * Experience in the telecom infrastructure industry and/or power industry is a plus but not required And you’ll be even better prepared if you have the following: * Experience in the engineering or construction industry   How to Apply Our online application will give you the option to apply to this role as a complete person – not just a resume.
