Podiatric Medicine & Surgery Resident PGY-1

Position Title: Podiatry Resident (Podiatric Medicine & Surgery PGY-1)

Position Summary

The PGY-1 Podiatry Resident functions as an entry-level trainee responsible for developing the foundational clinical skills, medical knowledge, and professional behaviors necessary for podiatric medical and surgical practice,

Under close supervision, the resident participates in inpatient, outpatient, and emergency care settings while learning to evaluate, diagnose, and treat foot and ankle conditions and associated systemic diseases,

The PGY-1 year focuses on establishing core competencies and gaining broad exposure to general medical and surgical principles,

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1,

Patient Care

Perform initial patient evaluations including histories, physical examinations, and podiatric-focused assessments,

Develop basic differential diagnoses and initial treatment plans under supervision,

Participate in daily inpatient rounds, order entry, documentation, and patient follow-up,

Assist with wound care, dressing changes, casting, splinting, and other essential podiatric procedures,

Provide care in outpatient clinics, inpatient settings, and emergency consultations,

Recognize and appropriately escalate acute or emergent conditions,

Medical Knowledge

Demonstrate understanding of basic podiatric anatomy, biomechanics, pathology, and medical conditions related to the lower extremity,

Acquire knowledge in general medicine, radiology, infectious disease, vascular medicine, and other specialties relevant to foot and ankle care,

Participate in lectures, conferences, journal clubs, and workshops,

Surgical Skills & Perioperative Care

Assist in the operating room in a supervised capacity, including instrument handling, sterile technique, and basic surgical tasks,

Learn preoperative evaluation, informed consent principles, and postoperative management,

Demonstrate progression in procedural knowledge and technical skills,

Interpersonal & Communication Skills

Communicate effectively and professionally with patients, families, faculty, and healthcare team members,

Ensure timely, accurate documentation in medical records,

Participate in handoffs and transitions of care, following institutional protocols,

Professionalism

Demonstrate responsibility, ethical behavior, reliability, and respect for patient privacy,

Adhere to duty hour requirements, supervision policies, and institutional standards,

Respond appropriately to feedback and engage in self-improvement,

Practice-Based Learning & Improvement

Seek feedback from attending physicians and senior residents,

Participate in quality improvement (QI) and patient safety activities,

Reflect on clinical performance and identify learning goals,

Systems-Based Practice

Understand the roles of interdisciplinary team members including nursing, physical therapy, vascular surgery, orthopedics, infectious disease, and social work,

Assist in navigating care processes, outpatient referrals, and follow-up coordination,

Demonstrate awareness of cost-effective and patient-centered care principles,

Supervision

PGY-1 residents function under direct supervision by attending podiatric physicians and senior residents,

They must seek guidance for new, complex, or invasive tasks and escalate concerns appropriately,

Educational Requirements

DPM degree from a CPME-accredited podiatric medical school

Successful match into a CPME-approved Podiatric Medicine ________________________________________

Other Responsibilities

Attendance at mandatory conferences, skills labs, and residency meetings

Completion of all evaluations, logs, milestone assessments, and institutional trainings

Participation in scholarly activity, including QI projects, presentations, or research (as required by program)
