What is an entry level plumber?

Entry level plumbers are individuals who are new to the plumbing trade, typically starting out as apprentices or helpers. They assist experienced plumbers with installing, repairing, and maintaining piping systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. Their duties often include preparing tools, measuring and cutting pipes, and learning about plumbing codes and safety procedures. With on-the-job training and sometimes classroom instruction, entry level plumbers gain the skills and experience needed to advance in their careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level plumber, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Plumber, you need a basic understanding of plumbing systems, manual dexterity, and a high school diploma or equivalent, with some roles requiring completion of an apprenticeship or vocational training. Familiarity with hand and power tools, pipe fitting techniques, and basic safety protocols is important, and obtaining an apprentice plumber license may be required in some regions. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and good communication skills help you work efficiently with clients and team members. These competencies ensure safe, effective installation and repair of plumbing systems, supporting customer satisfaction and career advancement.

What are some typical challenges faced by entry level plumbers during their first year on the job?

Entry level plumbers often encounter challenges such as adapting to physically demanding work, learning to use specialized tools safely, and understanding local plumbing codes. Additionally, they may need to quickly develop effective communication skills to work alongside experienced plumbers, contractors, and clients. Over time, hands-on experience helps new plumbers become more confident in troubleshooting plumbing issues and managing time efficiently on job sites.

Job description

Plumber I
Position Overview
As a Plumber I, you'll start your career in commercial plumbing by assisting experienced plumbers with basic maintenance, inspections, repairs, and installations in office buildings, hospitals, schools, retail spaces, and industrial facilities. Under close supervision, you'll gain hands-on experience with entry-level tasks while learning to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient plumbing solutions that support sustainable facility operations. Our people-first culture invests in your development from day one with structured training, mentorship, and clear advancement paths-empowering you to grow into a skilled journeyman while contributing to the safety, comfort, and efficiency of commercial spaces nationwide.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist senior plumbers with preventive maintenance, inspections, flushing, cleaning drains/fixtures, replacing washers/seals/gaskets, and lubricating components on commercial plumbing systems (domestic water, drainage, hydronic heating/cooling, backflow devices).
  • Support troubleshooting and repairs under direct guidance, including clearing minor clogs, tightening fittings, replacing basic fixtures (faucets, toilets, urinals), and assisting with pipe repairs or rerouting.
  • Perform general service call support: prepare tools/parts, document findings, take photos, and complete basic work order entries.
  • Help maintain clean, organized work areas, vehicles, and tools; load/unload equipment and materials as needed.
  • Participate fully in daily safety briefings, job hazard analyses, toolbox talks, and follow all safety protocols and PPE requirements.
  • Actively learn commercial plumbing systems, codes (IPC/UPC), backflow principles, and best practices through on-the-job training, ride-alongs, and assigned coursework.
  • Communicate professionally with customers and team members, reporting observations and asking questions to build knowledge.

Supervisory Responsibilities None (entry-level role focused on learning and assisting journeyman and senior plumbers).
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Experience: 0-3 years in plumbing, mechanical, facilities maintenance, construction, or related trade field; no prior commercial plumbing experience required-strong mechanical aptitude, eagerness to learn, and positive attitude essential.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; trade school, vocational training, or plumbing certificate a plus (will be supported through company-sponsored programs).
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver's license and clean driving record required; backflow prevention certification (or willingness to obtain) a plus; OSHA 10-hour certification encouraged (company support provided).
  • Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use tools/equipment for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial settings (indoor/outdoor, mechanical rooms, rooftops, varying weather); exposure to noise, dust, heights, water, sewage, chemicals, and confined-space hazards; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, plumbing codes, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, and steel-toed boots at all times-safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position. Occasional regional travel within assigned market or on-call rotations may be required as business needs dictate.

Required Skills
  • Basic plumbing/mechanical aptitude and tool familiarity (pipe wrenches, cutters, torches, drain snakes, hand tools).
  • Safety awareness, attention to detail, and willingness to follow instructions and learn quickly.
  • Customer service orientation, clear communication, and teamwork.
  • Basic documentation (work orders, photos, notes) and smartphone/tablet proficiency for digital reporting.
  • Valid driver's license; ability to pass background/drug screening and maintain clean driving record.
