Purpose

Entry Level position responsible for basic constructioin and maitenence activities. May not perform covered tasks on an independent basis until qualified for that covered task under the company's operator qualification program.

Employees assigned to Construction classifications must maintain a primary residence located within 20 driving miles of the city limits of the designated Service Center.   Driving distance will be determined by using Google Maps under normal traffic conditions.  Employees on standby must also be able to meet required response times within the operating area within 55 minutes.

Accountabilities
  • Assists in the installation and maintenance of gas lines, meters and regulators.
  • Turns gas lines on and off as necessary. Prepares appropriate work orders.
  • Assists in conducting leakage surveys.  Reads maps, locates underground gas lines, classifies gas leaks, operates combustible gas indicators and flame ionization units. Prepares leak repair work orders.
  • May operate and maintain heavy and/or specialized equipment and tools in order to dig and backfill ditches, load and unload pipe, meter fittings and other materials.
  • Reviews job site maps for all utility lines.  Ensures placement of utility markings at job site.
  • Assists in welding operations for the installation, maintenance and repair of pipes, meter guards and regular settings.
  • Provides barricade and channelization services at worksites that are in compliance with Federal and state regulations and Company standards.
  • May assist in the installation and maintenance of cathodic protection systems in accordance with Federal and state pipeline safety regulation and Company standards.
  • May conduct interference surveys, maintains and repairs rectifiers and runs short locators to replace bad insulators.
  • May conduct surveys of new construction, schools, shopping centers and other areas as required.  Checks high pressure lines, loss of gas, odorization and pressure upgrades.
  • Maybe required to respond to emergency and after hour service calls.
  • Requires the ability to communicate with internal and/or external customers in order to obtain and/or provide basic types of factual information.
  • Requires the ability to perform basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Works in outdoor environment.
  • Requires frequently performing activities, including but not limited to stooping, bending, crawling, kneeling, grasping, reaching, climbing and lifting objects up to 100 pounds (eg: lifting and pulling rolls of pipe).
  • May have residency requirement due to call-out response time.
  • May require welding certification.
  • May require a commercial driver’s license (CDL).
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Education and Experience
  • General educational knowledge normally acquired through a high school diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • Must satisfactorily complete all regulatory and company requirements/qualifications for the applicable classification prior to performing a covered task independently.
  • Valid driver’s license.
