Job Description Summary:
The Buyer / Planner I provides day-to-day tactical support for purchasing and production planning activities to ensure material availability and smooth production execution. This entry-level role focuses on purchase order processing, schedule maintenance, data accuracy, and cross-functional coordination rather than supplier strategy or demand ownership. The position works closely with buyers, planners, production, and inventory teams to help meet customer delivery commitments.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Purchasing / Buying Support (Tactical)
  • Create, release, and maintain purchase orders for direct materials and components based on system recommendations and planner/buyer direction.
  • Track supplier order acknowledgements, delivery dates, and open order status.
  • Follow up with suppliers on late, short, or incorrect deliveries and escalate issues as needed.
  • Maintain accurate purchasing data in the ERP/MRP system (pricing, lead times, MOQ, supplier confirmations).
  • Assist with resolving invoice discrepancies and receiving issues.
  • Support inventory replenishment activities to prevent material shortages or excess.

Production Planning Support (Tactical)
  • Assist with maintaining daily and weekly production schedules in ERP/MRP systems.
  • Monitor work order status and flag material or scheduling conflicts to planners.
  • Verify material availability prior to work order release.
  • Update lead times, routings, and bills of material as directed.
  • Help coordinate priorities between production, purchasing, and inventory control.
  • Support engineering change implementation by ensuring correct material setup and timing.

Data, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
  • Run standard reports related to open orders, shortages, inventory levels, and schedule adherence.
  • Provide accurate and timely information to buyers, planners, and production supervisors.
  • Participate in inventory accuracy and cycle count support activities.
  • Assist with continuous improvement efforts related to planning, purchasing, and material flow.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications
Education & Experience Requirements
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Operations, or related field preferred but not required.
  • 0-2 years of experience in a manufacturing, supply chain, or materials role.
  • Internship or co-op experience in purchasing or planning a plus.

Skills & Competencies
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems (SAP, Oracle, or similar preferred).
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail and data accuracy.
  • Ability to follow standard processes and work instructions.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
