Job description

The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is adding a Part-time Environmental Scientist - Entry Level to support our growing environmental consulting practice in New York State and throughout the Northeastern United States.

This is a part-time, benefited, hourly position based out of our Rochester, New York office. The successful candidate will primarily support energy projects in a field-based role, helping clients navigate natural resource considerations associated with wildlife, wetlands, and other environmental resources.

The ideal candidate will have experience conducting natural resource assessments and collecting high-quality biological field data, including threatened and endangered (T&E) species and avian surveys, as well as the ability to work on solid and hazardous waste remediation sites. A background in wetlands and avian biology with field survey experience is highly desirable.

Candidates should have experience collecting biological field data using current technologies such as Esri Field Maps or similar tablet- and mobile-based systems. Additional experience with technical writing and preparing portions of natural resource-focused reports in a consulting, agency, or academic environment is preferred.

The Environmental Scientist will primarily work in a team environment with environmental scientists and other technical professionals conducting biological field surveys throughout New York State, with the potential to support projects elsewhere in the continental United States.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conduct biological field surveys, including avian surveys, wetland delineations, wildlife habitat assessments, and other natural resource surveys as needed.
  • Collect, document, and manage high-quality biological and environmental field data.
  • Support state and local permit applications and environmental due diligence activities for energy projects.
  • Support Tetra Tech's nationwide network of biologists and natural resource professionals.
  • Conduct independent data quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), as required.
  • Support environmental site assessment field activities and associated reporting.
  • Assist with preparation of technical documentation and natural resource reports.
  • Conduct activities in accordance with internal procedures, applicable regulations, and industry standards.
  • Work safely at all times and report health and safety incidents or concerns.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • College-level coursework in wetland ecology, ornithology, wildlife science, ecology/general biology, or related disciplines.
  • 1-3 years of relevant professional experience, including field data collection.
  • Experience using field technologies such as handheld GPS units, tablets, mobile data collection applications, or similar equipment.
  • Ability and willingness to conduct fieldwork and travel to project sites as required.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting avian surveys for species found in the Eastern United States.
  • Experience conducting rare plant and/or wetland surveys using established protocols.
  • Experience conducting wildlife surveys, including reptile, amphibian, and/or bat surveys for special-status or common species.
  • Experience conducting wetland delineations using U.S. Army Corps of Engineers methods in the Northeastern United States.
  • Experience with Esri Field Maps or similar mobile field data collection applications.
  • Basic technical writing experience and/or experience contributing to natural resource-focused reports.
  • Previous Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) experience.

Work Environment & Travel

  • This position is based out of Tetra Tech's Rochester, New York office and will involve significant fieldwork throughout New York State. Travel to other locations within the continental United States may occasionally be required.
  • Fieldwork may involve working outdoors in varying terrain, weather conditions, and environmental settings.

Compensation:

Pay commensurate with experience.

Pay Range: $25.00-$32.00 hourly
