Description Entry Level Firefighter EMT (Applicant must be a currently certified EMT) This recruitment is to establish a hiring list for anticipated vacancies in the future for Entry Level Firefighter EMT's. To be considered, candidates must earn a minimum score of 80% on the Public Safety Testing (PST) Firefighter Written Exam and designate DuPont Fire as a department of choice through PST. Candidates who do not meet both requirements will not be considered. Veteran's preference will be applied in accordance with Washington State law and Civil Service Rules.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of Civil Service hiring requirements, a background investigation, psychological evaluation, medical examination, drug screening, and verification of all required certifications. The Fire Department works a 48/96-hour shift schedule (including events, call back, deployments, etc.), operating out of one centrally located fire station and providing emergency and non-emergency response to fire, EMS, rescue, hazardous materials, wildland incidents, citizen assists and many other types of calls. The department currently runs approximately 950-1000 calls per year, of which is about 80% medical (-70% of those medical calls are patients that require paramedic intervention). The Department participates in a regional mutual aid system with neighboring agencies

Private ambulance providers also respond as needed provide paramedic level care. GENERAL PURPOSE The firefighter's work includes responding to and dealing with emergency situations, natural conditions that pose a threat to life and property, and incidents of service to the citizens. Firefighters in this position are responsible for the protection of life and property through firefighting activities, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, emergency medical services, fire inspections activities, and public education.

They perform a full range of emergency work under adverse and strenuous physical conditions. Firefighters have a high risk of exposure to hazardous conditions, toxic chemicals and infectious diseases encountered during firefighting or emergency medical incidents. SUPERVISION RECEIEVED Works under the close supervision of the Fire Captain.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED None Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES May perform hazardous tasks for long periods of time in emergency conditions of high stress, strenuous physical exertion under such conditions as heights, cramped surroundings, extreme temperatures, smoky environments and limited visibility. Remove persons from danger and administer emergency medical aid as required. Participate in fire drills and attend classes on firefighting, emergency medical services, disaster control, etc.

Maintain skill level through ongoing training to prevent degradation of skills. Receive emergency alarms; operate radio and other communications equipment under routine and emergency conditions. Perform and maintain physical conditioning in accordance with Departmental Standard Operating Procedures, and Labor Agreement.

Drive or ride Fire Department apparatus to alarms, place equipment, lay and connect hoses and nozzles, raise and climb ladders, use high pressure water hoses, chemical extinguishing agents and other tools and equipment as required. Ventilate burning structures; perform salvage operations and other related tasks. Complete and maintain paperwork, records and forms as directed by Company Officer.

Participate in the in-service company inspection program. Drive, operate and maintain Fire Department equipment and apparatus. Are responsible to be familiar with and adhere to Department Standard Operating Procedures.

Perform minor maintenance and inspection of fire hydrants, apparatus, and equipment. Test pumpers, hose, ladders and extinguishers. Participate in public education.

Perform maintenance of station. Maintain personal appearance as directed by Department Standard Operating Procedures. Perform other related work as assigned.

Typical Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Applicant must be at least 18 years of age. Must have a high school diploma or General Education Development certification (GED). Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license or obtain one within 30 days and successfully complete the City's defensive driving program prior to driving apparatus.

Successfully pass (80%) the Public Safety Testing (PST) Firefighter Written Exam, which must be linked to the City of DuPont account Must possess a current Washington State EMT Certification or National Registry, with at least 12 months of certification.

Must be able to successfully obtain Washington State Department of Health and Pierce County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency Authorization by hire date or as authorized by the Fire Chief. Must successfully complete a career firefighter academy meeting the requirements of Article 9 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and obtain an IFSAC or Pro Board Firefighter I certification, unless the applicant has successfully completed a qualifying career academy within the previous three (3) years. Must be able to mentally and physically perform the described duties and/or tasks as a firefighter, Must be able to act/react calmly with a professional demeanor when faced with grotesque, traumatic injuries.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES Modern methods, principles, techniques and practices applied to firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials, fire inspections, disasters and related fields. Principles and practices of first aid including EMT training. Hazardous materials: Recognition and Identification, at the Operations Level.

Topography and street locations of the fire protection area. A general knowledge of basic building construction, hazards, built-in protective devices in buildings, including general control points, placement and operation of public utilities. Traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involving apparatus and equipment operation.

Mechanical and operating principles involved in the operation and maintenance of firefighting apparatus and equipment. Follow Department Standard Operating Procedures Analyzing dangerous situations rapidly and accurately and taking reasonable course of action. Performing hose, fire hydrant, and ladder evolutions and apparatus operations.

Perform physically demanding firefighting skills and duties including, but not limited to, carrying and manipulating hose, ladders and rescue equipment. Adequate knowledge of fire prevention codes and fire safety as it relates to the company level programs. Inspect and detect violations and hazards in dwellings and other buildings and to make proper recommendations for the correction of findings through company inspections.

Deal with the public courteously and effectively. Maintain harmonious working relationships with coworkers. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Understand and execute specific orders or instructions. React quickly and calmly in a stressful and hazardous condition. Ensure that all work is performed in a safe manner, following all applicable safety guidelines.

Work in hazardous conditions where there is a risk of serious injury or loss of life. Recall facts and conditions observed while under severe physical and emotional stress. Additional Information PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Can carry a self-contained breathing apparatus weighing approximately 35 pounds on his/her back and support 100 pounds of hose on his/her shoulder while walking to a fire.

Crawl on his/her hands and knees. Climb up and down ladders and stairs with equipment or hose lines. Pull heavy objects such as a person from a hazardous condition.

Work in ambient temperatures of 68 to 72 degrees wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus. Work in a confined space such as an attic or crawl space of a structure. Lift a loaded stretcher into an ambulance.

Grip ropes and tools with gloved hands. Tie knots. Use equipment to pull down ceiling or walls requiring his/her arms to be above his/her head.

Cut or chop holes in roofs, walls, and floors using an ax. Lift a ladder weighing 75 pounds off of a truck or off the ground safely. SELECTION GUIDELINE Formal application, rating of education and experience, oral interview and reference checks are required.
