Entry Level Modeling Simulation Engineer information

What is an entry level modeling simulation engineer?

An Entry Level Modeling Simulation Engineer is a professional who uses computer models and simulations to analyze, test, and improve systems or products, often in fields like aerospace, automotive, or manufacturing. They typically work with software tools to create virtual representations of real-world processes, enabling companies to predict outcomes and optimize designs before physical prototypes are built. This role is ideal for recent graduates or those new to the industry, providing foundational experience in engineering analysis and problem-solving. Responsibilities may include developing simulation models, validating results, and collaborating with senior engineers and other departments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level modeling simulation engineer?

To thrive as an Entry Level Modeling Simulation Engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, physics, and computer science, usually supported by a relevant engineering or STEM degree. Familiarity with simulation software (like MATLAB or Simulink), programming languages (such as Python or C++), and version control systems is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork help set you apart in this role. These skills ensure accurate model development, effective collaboration, and the ability to solve complex real-world engineering problems.

What kinds of projects and collaboration can I expect as an entry level modeling simulation engineer?

As an Entry Level Modeling Simulation Engineer, you'll typically work on projects involving the creation, testing, and validation of simulation models for systems or products. You'll collaborate closely with senior engineers, software developers, and sometimes project managers to ensure model accuracy and integration into larger projects. Expect to contribute by running simulations, analyzing data, and preparing reports, while learning industry-standard tools and methodologies. The work environment is often team-oriented, with regular meetings to discuss progress and troubleshoot challenges together.

What is the difference between Entry Level Modeling Simulation Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectEntry Level Modeling Simulation EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related fields; basic knowledge of simulation softwareBachelor's in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering; CAD and design software skills
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, engineering teams, simulation software environmentsDesign studios, manufacturing facilities, engineering departments
Employer & Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, defense, manufacturing companiesProduct design firms, manufacturing companies, R&D departments

While both roles require a background in mechanical engineering and involve technical skills, the Entry Level Modeling Simulation Engineer focuses on creating and analyzing virtual models using simulation software, whereas the Mechanical Design Engineer emphasizes designing physical components and systems. Both roles are essential in product development but differ in their primary tasks and tools used.

The Opportunity
Hitachi Energy's Grid Automation business is looking for an Application Engineer to develop software applications used by electrical utilities to monitor, study, optimize, control, and simulate power networks, smart grid systems, and distributed energy resources. In this role, you will work on highly available, scalable, and reliable power systems software that supports transmission and distribution networks relied on every day. You will design, develop, test, review, and maintain applications that help utility operators improve grid reliability, evaluate system conditions, and support real-time operational needs. This role offers the opportunity to apply software development skills alongside power systems knowledge, working across areas such as EMS applications, power system modeling, simulation, optimization, numerical methods, and data standards. Your work will contribute to the future of grid automation by helping create tools that support a more resilient, intelligent, and innovative power grid.
How You'll Make an Impact
  • Design, develop, test, review, and maintain power systems applications with quality and reliability in mind.
  • Build software applications that support electrical utility operations, smart grid capabilities, and distributed energy resource use cases.
  • Collaborate with team members on planning, development, and testing to meet agreed "definition of done" criteria.
  • Apply power system studies, modeling, simulation, optimization, and numerical methods to application development.
  • Support EMS-related applications such as load flow, contingency evaluation, state estimation, operator training simulators, and power system simulators.
  • Identify technical issues, schedule risks, and quality concerns, then work with the team to resolve them.
  • Contribute to retrospectives, reflection, and steady incremental improvement across the software development process.
  • Work across Linux and Windows development environments using relevant programming languages and tools.
  • Responsible to ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.

Your Background
  • Candidate must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for Hitachi Energy in the United States.
  • Master's degree or foreign equivalent degree from four-year college or university in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or other related Engineering fields; Ph.D. will be a plus.
  • Experience working on software development, debugging, and performance tuning is very desirable.
  • Solid knowledge and experience with power system studies, operation, modeling, simulation, optimization, and numerical methods.
  • Familiarity with EMS applications, such as load flow, contingency evaluation, state estimation, operator training simulators, and power system simulators, is advantageous.
  • Proficiency or experience with programming languages utilizing C#, C/C++, Java, Python, or FORTRAN, along with experience in Linux and Windows development environments.
  • Experience with power system data models and standards, such as CIM/XML, Agile development environments, and proficiency in spoken and written English are beneficial or required as applicable.

More About Us
At Hitachi Energy, you will gain exposure to advanced grid automation technologies, collaborate with experienced professionals across the power industry, and continue building your technical and professional capabilities.
  • Opportunities to work on innovative technologies that shape the future of energy.
  • A collaborative environment with experienced professionals across the power industry.
  • Access to learning platforms and career development programs.
