$3,000 Incentive!
(A total of $3,000 will be paid in $1,000 installments after 12, 24, and 36 months of continuous, satisfactory employment. Eligibility: you must be a new first time employee to the City of Lawrence hired after 4/28/2026 into this specific position)
Summary:
The City of Lawrence is currently seeking a skilled and dependable Master Mechanic to join our team. This is an advanced-level position responsible for performing preventive maintenance and complex repairs on a wide variety of vehicles, rolling stock, and non-rolling equipment in the fleet.
Responsibilities:
  • Diagnose and repair gasoline, diesel, and other types of alternative fuel-powered equipment
  • Troubleshoot and service hydraulic and electrical systems
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance activities, and parts used
  • Provide technical support and guidance to entry level mechanics and garage personnel
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety standards and departmental procedures

This role requires a high level of expertise and a thorough understanding of all procedures and protocols within the assigned area.
Master Mechanic I - Minimum Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, plus additional specialized training in automotive and/or mechanical repair.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in automotive or mechanical repair.
  • Knowledge and skills related to the repair of fire apparatus and emergency medical units is strongly preferred.

Additional Requirements:
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL); Class B is required, Class A is preferred. An Air Brake Endorsement is mandatory.
  • Must supply personal hand tools adequate to repair most common vehicles or equipment.
  • ASE Master Certification must be obtained within 24 months of hire.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification is strongly preferred.

Other Requirements:
  • Successful candidates must pass a background check, city physical, and drug screening.

Master Mechanic II - Minimum Requirements
The Master Mechanic II position requires all qualifications and requirements listed above for the Master Mechanic I position, plus the following additional requirements:
  • ASE Master Certification is required at the time of appointment.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Master Certification is required at the time of appointment.
