Our diverse operational fleet serves the science, research, offshore energy, defense, and renewable energy sectors, delivering reliable and specialized maritime services. Stabbert is currently looking for Mate’s to join our fleet.


Position Summary:


2nd Mate:

The 2nd Mate is a licensed deck officer responsible for the safe navigation and operations of the vessel, safety management, and ensuring compliance of maritime laws and regulations. They serve as the ship’s navigation officer and support Master in all aspects of vessel management.


3rd Mate:

The 3rd Mate is an entry-level officer position responsible for safety and security duties, including maintaining life-saving and firefighting equipment, conducting safety drills, and assisting with navigation and cargo operations under supervision. They support the 2nd Mate and Captain, gaining experience and progressing toward higher officer roles.


Essential Functions:

  • Working under the direction of the captain to ensure the safe operation of the vessel.
  • Stand bridge watches operating and navigating the vessel.
  • Order and maintain ship's charts, publications, and navigation supplies.
  • Maintain logs and perform routine maintenance.
  • Responsible for the readiness of bridge equipment, performing operating tests.
  • Stand security watch when required.
  • Support the vessel in adhering to all safety and flag requirements.
  • Ensure all aspects of the SMS are followed.
  • Train junior crew in vessel operations and SMS requirements.
  • Complete all assigned work with the highest regard for safety.
  • Ensure Captain is kept informed of the status of all equipment and work accomplished, including any SMS non-conformities.
  • Keep detailed logs noting all failures, maintenance, and repair done to equipment and vessel.
Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to analyze problems via communication while a vessel is at sea or in a remote location.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills; capable of maintaining strong relationships both with the team and customers.
  • Time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Must be well-organized, detail and customer-oriented (internal and external), self-starter, self-motivated, prioritize duties, and follow through with tasks to completion as necessary.
  • Working knowledge in MS Office and Adobe DC.

Education and/or Requirements:

  • 2nd or 3rd Mate Unlimited Oceans license issued by the US Coast Guard.
  • Valid STCW certifications
  • Must have a US Passport
  • DP Certification is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of vessel operations
  • Results-oriented, self-starter with a high level of initiative
  • Strong ability to organize and communicate with others
  • Strong work ethics, values, and principles with safety as the first priority
  • Understand and be able to support SMS.
