Responsibilities

The Histotechnician is responsible for the preparation of tissue specimens for microscopic examination by the pathologist. This role performs a variety of histology procedures including grossing assistance, fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining of tissue samples. The Histotechnician ensures high-quality, accurate, and timely specimen preparation in compliance with laboratory policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. The position also supports immunohistochemistry processes, equipment maintenance, and quality assurance activities to ensure optimal diagnostic outcomes and efficient laboratory operations.

This individual: 1) Prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination, including fixation, processing, embedding, and microtomy 2) Perform routine and special staining procedures according to established protocols 3) Assist with immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining and related procedures as applicable 4) Ensure proper specimen identification, labeling, and tracking throughout all stages of processing 5) Maintain quality and integrity of tissue samples to support accurate diagnosis 6) Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot histology equipment such as microtomes, processors, and stainers 7) Adhere to laboratory policies, procedures, and safety guidelines, including infection control practices 8) Maintain documentation, logs, and records in compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards (CAP, CLIA, TJC) 9) Perform quality control and participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities 10) Manage workflow to meet turnaround time expectations and prioritize urgent specimens 11) Assist with inventory management, including ordering and stocking of supplies and reagents 12) Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with safety regulations 13) Collaborate with pathologists, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals to support patient care 14) Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment 15) Participate in continuing education and competency assessments 16) Perform additional duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director or Manager.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

1. Associate's degree in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science with at least two years histotechnology on the job training, or completion of a histotechnology program required.2. HT/ASCP Certification, or equivalent, preferred.3. Minimum of one year hospital laboratory work experience, preferred.
