As a Veterinary Oncology Technician, you will play a critical role in supporting cancer patients throughout their treatment journey-from diagnosis through ongoing care.ย
ย ย Oncology Patient Careย
- Provide compassionate, high-quality care for patients undergoing cancer treatmentย
Monitor patients for:ย
- Chemotherapy side effectsย
- Changes in condition or comfort levelย
- Support long-term management of chronic oncology casesย
- Assist with patient appointments, rechecks, and treatment follow-upsย
ย Chemotherapy Administration & Safetyย
- Prepare and administer chemotherapeutic agents in accordance with safety protocolsย
- Follow strict hazardous drug handling guidelines (OSHA/NIOSH)ย
- Utilize proper PPE and safety equipmentย
- Ensure accurate dosing, documentation, and treatment trackingย
ย ย Diagnostics & Procedural Supportย
Assist with:ย
- Blood draws and lab workย
- Fine needle aspirates and biopsy supportย
- Staging diagnostics (imaging, lab collection coordination)ย
- Ensure patients are properly prepared for diagnostic proceduresย
ย ย Client Communication & Educationย
Educate clients on:ย
- Treatment plans and expectationsย
- Medication administration and side effectsย
- At-home care and quality of life considerationsย
- Provide empathetic support during emotionally sensitive conversationsย
- Build strong relationships with clients throughout the treatment processย
ย ย Critical Care Collaborationย
- Partner with ER and ICU teams for continuity of careย
- Recognize and respond to oncologic emergenciesย
- Participate in CPR/code response (RECOVER guidelines preferred)ย
ย ย Clinical Excellenceย
- Maintain accurate, detailed medical recordsย
- Ensure compliance with chemotherapy handling and safety standardsย
- Maintain oncology equipment and treatment areasย
- Support a clean, organized, and efficient workflowย
2+ years of experience in:ย
- Specialty, ER, ICU, or high-volume veterinary practiceย
- Strong background in:ย
- Patient care and clinical nursing skillsย
- Experience with:ย
- Venipuncture and lab sample handlingย
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, emotionally sensitive environment ย
ย Preferred Qualificationsย
- Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) credentials (highly valued, not required)ย
Prior experience in:ย
- Oncology or internal medicineย
- Chemotherapy administrationย
- Familiarity with:ย
- OSHA/NIOSH chemotherapy safety standardsย
- RECOVER CPR certificationย
- Strong client communication and education skills ย
