They often need to pass licensing exams, obtain certification, and sometimes complete additional training or residency to qualify for medical positions. Entry-level positions may include observerships, research roles, or transitional clinical jobs that help IMGs adapt to the healthcare system. These roles serve as important stepping stones for full medical licensure and independent practice.

Job description

Company Description

Through its program ofย certification, theย Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduatesย (ECFMG) assesses the readiness of internationalย medicalย graduatesย to enterย residencyย or fellowship programs in theย United Statesย that areย accreditedย by theย Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Educationย (ACGME).

ECFMG acts as the registration and score-reporting agency for theย USMLEย for foreign medical students/ graduates, or in short, it acts as the designated Dean's office for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) in contrast to the American Medical Graduates (AMGs).

It conducts three examinations:ย Step 1,ย Step 2CK,ย Step 2CS. The ECFMG certificate is issued to a physician if he or she passes the above the three exams within a time period of seven years.

Medical schools inย Canadaย that award theย M.D.ย are not assessed by ECFMG, because theย Liaison Committee on Medical Educationย historically accredited M.D.-granting institutions in both the U.S. and Canada (today, Canada has its own accrediting body that generally follows U.S. standards). M.D. graduates of American and Canadian institutions are not considered IMGs in either country.
