Overview
Engineer Assistant I is the first level in the engineering career series and applies entry-level engineering principles and practices in planning, designing, preparing and testing various engineering projects to develop and maintain the public infrastructure of the City of Dallas.
DEPARTMENTAL NOTE-
Engineer Assistant I (Fire Protection): Candidates with experience or knowledge in fire sprinkler, fire alarm, or MEP systems are preferred. This position is distinct from general Engineer Assistant I roles.
Essential Functions
1. Inspects and monitors construction or maintenance projects to ensure compliance with design specifications and contractual agreements. Coordinates technical support and management for construction-related activities.
2. Provides assistance to inspectors and supervisors to facilitate their job duties.
3. Analyzes engineering project problems in assigned areas for the City of Dallas and makes recommendations to ensure projects conform to departmental requirements and city, state and federal regulations.
4. Under the supervision of a Licensed Professional Engineer or other project manager, modifies and develops engineering plans and finds engineering solutions for problems related to city infrastructure and/or fire protection system.
5. Participates in the City of Dallas construction standards and specifications updates, helps with development and improvement of constructability review checklists and other guidance documents related to design projects.
6. Prepares and develops customized reports for program managers/project managers. Prepares detailed data of construction progress and inspections.
7. Assists, supports, and participates in developing scopes of work, tasks, milestones, and project budgets to forecast design and construction schedules, establish project objectives, or optimize process operations.
8. Communicates, engages, and interacts with other departments, citizens, consultants, contractors, and other government agencies to coordinate activities and provide information about projects.
9. Visits project sites in the field; ensures managers are up to date on project status and reports on project implementation and specifications; compiles construction analytics and prepares documents and reports regarding general activities, inspections, plan review activities, and other findings.
10. Checks, tracks, and monitors invoices for review and approval; coordinates meetings with consultants and utility companies.
11. Performs other work required or assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to manage entry level engineering projects, review and understand design plans, read and interpret engineering specifications.
  • Intermediary knowledge of math and engineering principles.
  • Strong communication skills, ability to effectively communicate with citizens, consultants, contractors, and other departments both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent technical writing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and active listening skills, and ability to handle challenges positively.
  • Written composition skills - project related documentation, letters, memos, and emails.
  • Ability to conduct research, compile relevant data, analyze data and write comprehensive reports.
  • Knowledge of project scheduling techniques and budget forecasting for construction projects and systems operation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective rapport with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees and the general public.
  • Basic knowledge of city regulations, department standards, fire safety codes, and state and federal regulations which affect engineering design and operating activities.
  • General knowledge and application of computer software packages.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering from program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (EAC/ABET).

LICENSE
  • Some positions may require a valid driver's license and good driving record

EQUIVALENCIES
  • Current Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate issued within the United States will qualify.
  • An individual who has passed the eight (8) hour Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) will qualify (a copy of official exam results must accompany application).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Some positions may be subject to field-work and inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to work full time in office unless otherwise directed by direct supervisor.

Salary Range
$60,569.60 - $73,528.00
The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
