They review medical records, assign standardized codes for diagnoses and procedures, and ensure claims are submitted accurately to insurance companies for reimbursement. As independent contractors, they typically work for multiple clients or healthcare providers, rather than being employed by a single organization. This role requires knowledge of medical terminology, coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA.

To thrive as an Entry Level Independent Contractor Medical Billing & Coding specialist, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, healthcare coding systems (like ICD-10 and CPT), and basic billing procedures, often supported by a relevant certification such as CPC or CCS. Familiarity with popular medical billing software, electronic health record (EHR) systems, and compliance standards like HIPAA is typically required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for managing sensitive information and working with clients remotely.
