AGENCY DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Administrative and Financial Services (DAFS) Corrections Service Center is responsible for program accounting, cash management, resident accounts, and revenue/expenditure control for the Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) that support six adult facilities and one youth facility. These facilities keep our communities safer by reducing harm through supportive intervention, empowering change, and restoring lives.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
As an Accounting Support Specialist located at the DAFS Corrections Service Center (CSC), this position will work as part of a close-knit unit primarily handling the Accounts Payables for the Dept of Corrections facility accounts. This position provides support work and financial services for the Dept of Corrections' facility accounts along with overseeing the Dept's fixed assets. Additional tasks include, but are not limited to, processing/reviewing/reconciling invoices, collection of documentation for Procurement Card transactions, analyzing data, reconciliation of accounts & producing monthly/seasonal financial reports.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to effectively manage daily tasks, provide excellent customer service, and adapt to changing priorities. The ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while also working independently is required. In addition to a strong financial background, the qualified candidate must have excellent communication skills and demonstrate the ability to work well in a team environment. Experience with MainePays, Advantage, and the DAFS Analytics database is preferred. This position is primarily located in Augusta with potentially limited travel to the facilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting theories, principles, methods, practices, and terminology.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting standards and systems.
  • Knowledge of computerized accounting systems and standardized desktop technology and products.
  • Ability to apply accounting principles in locating and correcting accounting errors.
  • Ability to apply accepted accounting principles to income statements and balance sheets.
  • Ability to verify fiscal source documents and application of fees, refunds, collections, and discounts.
  • Ability to review fiscal transactions for conformity with applicable laws, rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to recommend improvements in accounting controls, financial review trials, and business practices.
