Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, government agencies, construction companiesConsulting firms, government departments, construction firms

Entry Level Highway Engineers typically hold a bachelor's degree and focus on planning, design, and project management of highway projects. Civil Engineering Technicians usually have an associate degree and support engineers through drafting, data collection, and site inspections. Both roles work closely within the civil engineering industry but differ in education level and scope of responsibilities.

What does an entry level highway engineer do?

An entry level highway engineer assists in the planning, design, and construction of roads and highways. Their responsibilities typically include preparing drawings, reviewing project specifications, performing basic calculations, and supporting senior engineers with field inspections and data collection. They often use computer-aided design (CAD) software and follow safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. This role is ideal for recent graduates or those with limited experience looking to start a career in civil engineering, particularly in transportation infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level highway engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Highway Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering principles, typically with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field, and an EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification is often preferred. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or MicroStation), design standards (like AASHTO), and basic project management tools is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you excel in collaborative, deadline-driven environments. These skills ensure the engineer can design safe, efficient roadways while meeting regulatory and organizational requirements.

What are some typical challenges faced by entry level highway engineers when starting out, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level highway engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to complex design software, understanding regulatory standards, and managing multiple project deadlines. It's common to feel overwhelmed by the technical aspects and the fast-paced nature of infrastructure projects. To overcome these hurdles, new engineers should proactively seek guidance from experienced team members, take advantage of training resources offered by their employer, and regularly review industry standards. Open communication and a willingness to ask questions can help build confidence and ensure successful project contributions.
