How much do entry level geologist jobs pay per year?
What does an entry level geologist do?
How can I get a job as an entry level geologist?
If you want to get an entry-level job as a geologist, you need to pursue a bachelor's degree in geology or environmental science. You need a strong knowledge of physics, math, and physical science. Many geologists use geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS) to fulfill their duties, so you must be familiar with these technologies. If you work in a specific industry, such as petroleum, mining, or city planning, you need a basic understanding of the policies, procedures, and regulations associated with the field. Additional qualifications include researching skills and excellent communication abilities.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level geologist?
What are some common challenges faced by entry level geologists in their first year, and how can they be addressed?
What is the difference between Entry Level Geologist vs Geotechnical Engineer?
| Aspect | Entry Level Geologist | Geotechnical Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Geology or Earth Sciences | Bachelor's in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field |
| Work Environment | Fieldwork, sampling, lab analysis | Design, analysis, site assessments |
| Industry Usage | Mining, environmental consulting, oil & gas | Construction, infrastructure, foundation design |
Entry Level Geologists and Geotechnical Engineers often share educational backgrounds and work in related industries. While geologists focus on studying Earth's materials and field sampling, geotechnical engineers apply engineering principles to soil and rock analysis for construction projects. Both roles may involve site investigations, but their specific tasks and career paths differ. Understanding these distinctions helps job seekers identify the right entry point in the geosciences or engineering fields.

Job description
Chevron is one of the world's leading integrated energy companies. We believe affordable, reliable and ever-cleaner energy is essential to achieve a more prosperous and sustainable world. Chevron produces crude oil and natural gas, manufactures transportation fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals, and additives, and develops technologies that enhance our business and industry. To advance a lower-carbon future, we are focused on efficiently decreasing our carbon intensity, increasing renewables and offsets in support of our business, and investing in low-carbon technologies that enable commercial solutions. More information about Chevron is available at www.chevron.com.
For the 2026-2027 recruiting season, Chevron is accepting online applications for entry-level Earth Scientists.
Primary Location includes:
- Houston, Texas
Earth Scientists within Chevron are part of multi-disciplinary teams which vary in make-up but can include geologists, geophysicists, engineers, data scientists, and/or software developers. Earth Scientists develop technical skills in geoscience, geophysics, and petrophysics assignments focused on exploration, development, reservoir characterization, and well operations.
Entry-level Earth Scientists are assigned to positions and projects that contribute value to Chevron based on degree, relevant academic preparation, previous work experience, and career objectives. They will be provided guidance by a supervisor and a technical mentor.
For recent graduates, Chevron has a competency-based employee development program that typically includes two to three technical assignments in the first 5 years of their career. This is supported by comprehensive technical training and mentoring combined with on-the-job experience. Mobility is encouraged as there are many opportunities for Chevron Earth Scientists to work in a variety of assignments at different locations.
As an Earth Scientist, you could begin your career in Chevron's domestic upstream operations, global exploration, or Chevron's research-focused Center of Excellence (COE) spending your first 5-10 years in a combination of exploration, appraisal, asset development, and/or technology assignments. You will be asked to solve challenging problems with the opportunity to utilize cutting-edge digital technologies and techniques. Opportunities to transfer to overseas locations may become possible after ten or more years of experience. Other opportunities for Earth Scientists include well-site operations, reservoir modeling, portfolio management, subsurface data science, technology deployment, technical team leadership, and various technical specialty focused positions such as stratigrapher, structural geologist, geophysicist, petrophysicist, basin analyst, and earth modeler.
Required Qualifications:
- Students completing the last year of their Master's or Doctorate Thesis program or with less than 2 years post-graduate degree experience in geology, geophysics, geological engineering, or related fields or individuals with a Master's or Doctorate degree in geology, geophysics, geological engineering, or related fields.
- Professional/academic focus in a technical area aligned with Chevron's business needs.
- Strong academic performance in core programs, communication, leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
- Position may require driving on a routine basis.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Previous experience in an integrated oil or international service company intern program and/or prior experience with industry workflows for subsurface characterization.
- Participation in an energy industry or sponsored university research project.
- Practical experience with geoscience coding, data science, and/or machine learning.
These positions may involve Chevron Oil, Products & Gas (OPG) technologies that are subject to U.S. export controls and trade sanctions. These export control laws apply to individuals who are (a) not U.S. citizens, permanent resident aliens, temporary resident aliens, applicants for temporary resident status, refugees, or asylees; and who are also (b) current citizens or permanent residents of a country that is subject to comprehensive trade sanctions under U.S. export control law, http://www.treasury.gov/resource-center/sanctions/Pages/default.aspx. As such, we regret that we would be unable to provide a meaningful internship experience at OPG for you because under government regulations, OPG would not be able to allow access to such technologies absent an authorization from the U.S. government. For this reason, OPG is not considering applicants who are current citizens and/or permanent residents of countries subject to comprehensive U.S. trade sanctions.
Chevron regrets that it will not sponsor employment visas or consider individuals on time-limited visa status for this position unless the candidatepossesses aPh.D. or is currently enrolled in a Ph.D.program.
