What is an Entry Level Full Stack Software Engineer?

An Entry Level Full Stack Software Engineer is a developer who works on both the front-end (client side) and back-end (server side) of web applications, typically at the beginning of their career. They are usually familiar with basic programming languages such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS for the front end, and may use languages like Python, Java, or Node.js for the back end. These engineers often work under the guidance of more experienced team members, helping to build, test, and maintain software solutions. Their role provides broad exposure to multiple technologies, making it a strong foundation for a software engineering career.

What types of projects and technologies can an Entry Level Full Stack Software Engineer expect to work with during their first year?

As an Entry Level Full Stack Software Engineer, you'll likely work on a range of web application projects involving both front-end and back-end development. Common technologies include JavaScript frameworks like React or Angular for the front end, and Node.js, Python, or Java for the back end, along with databases such as MySQL or MongoDB. You'll collaborate closely with designers, senior developers, and QA engineers, often participating in agile sprints and code reviews. This exposure helps you quickly build practical skills and gain insight into the full development lifecycle, laying a strong foundation for career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Full Stack Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as an Entry Level Full Stack Software Engineer, you need a solid grasp of programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, or Java), web development frameworks, and a relevant degree or equivalent coding experience. Familiarity with tools like Git, databases (SQL/NoSQL), and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and a willingness to learn new technologies set top performers apart. These abilities are crucial for building scalable applications, collaborating with diverse teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technical requirements.

Job description

Senior Full Stack Software Engineer
Location: Remote (US Only) - Eastern Time Zone
About Us
Gambyt's mission is to make real-money gaming products more relevant and accessible to the world. We are specialists in the lottery industry and create products that deliver life-changing winning moments to players while raising billions of dollars every year for good causes such as public education, nature conservancy, and programs for seniors.
Through our agile software development practice, we create digital products such as games, loyalty programs, and user experiences that are loved by players. Our team consists of extremely talented product managers, UX/UI designers, software engineers, project managers and quality testers that collaborate closely to achieve our vision.
We have rebuilt our company around a distributed remote-work engagement model. To help strengthen connections across our team, we provide resources to support employee engagement and well-being, organize monthly virtual activities, and regularly experiment with new benefits for remote work.
Though fully remote, we are headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which was ranked as a top 3 tech hub by Bloomberg, and is located in the first state in the country where all forms of internet wagering (lottery, casino, sports) have been legalized. We are on the ground floor of an industry revolution that is ripe for digital disruption and looking to expand our world-class team.
Job Description
Gambyt is seeking a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer who can contribute across multiple codebases and product areas with minimal supervision. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who brings strong engineering fundamentals, sound technical judgment, and the ability to navigate ambiguity and define technical direction as requirements and priorities evolve.
You will work across backend services, cloud infrastructure, web frontends, and mobile applications as needed, contributing where your skills and the business needs align. Rather than being focused on a single platform, this role requires flexibility, ownership, and a product-oriented mindset.
This is a high-impact role delivering software for major US state lottery customers. You will collaborate closely with product, design, engineering peers, and client stakeholders to deliver reliable, scalable, and high-quality software.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead technical decisions that balance product goals, business constraints, system scalability, and long-term maintainability.
  • Improve engineering standards through code review and the establishment of shared patterns and best practices.
  • Contribute across multiple codebases and platforms, including backend services, web applications, and mobile apps
  • Mentor other engineers and contribute to a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement
  • Partner closely with product and design to translate real requirements into effective technical solutions

Required Qualifications
  • Strong engineering fundamentals and experience building and shipping production software
  • Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of production systems or major features
  • Ability to operate with high autonomy and make sound technical decisions across unfamiliar systems
  • Comfort working across backend, frontend, and mobile codebases as business needs change
  • Product-oriented mindset with a focus on solving real problems rather than optimizing for a single technology
  • Clear communication skills and a collaborative approach to decision-making
  • Based in the U.S., able to work standard Eastern Time hours

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with our technologies is a plus but not required-strong fundamentals and the ability to learn quickly are more important. Our technologies include:
  • Mobile: Swift (iOS), Kotlin (Android)
  • Frontend: JavaScript, TypeScript, React
  • Backend: Node.js (with Express), Postgres, Redis
  • Infrastructure: AWS, Heroku, Terraform, GitHub Actions
  • Tools: GitHub, modern CI/CD pipelines

Employee Benefits
All full-time employees receive:
  • Remote work environment
  • Competitive compensation packages
  • Performance and anniversary bonus programs
  • Equity program in our privately-held company
  • Unlimited vacation and personal leave
  • Summer Fridays during the summer months (coordinated company-wide time off)
  • Excellent health and dental benefits, with no premium copays
  • 401k program with guaranteed company contribution
  • Monthly perks like food delivery to your home
  • Monthly cell phone and computer stipend
