What Is the Job of an Entry Level Full Stack Developer?

A full stack is the front and back end of an application. It is comprised of a computer system, a programming language, database software, and a computer server. As an entry-level full stack developer, your responsibilities consist of developing something on behalf of a client. In an entry-level full stack developer role, you may help build an SQL database, a JavaScript application, or a PHP database on a server. Your qualifications should include a general knowledge of every level of software development as well as one or more common programming languages such as HTML, CSS, Python, and SQL.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Full Stack Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Full Stack Developer, you need proficiency in both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, or Java) technologies, supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with databases (SQL/NoSQL), version control systems like Git, and frameworks such as React or Express is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you work collaboratively and adapt to changing project requirements. These skills and tools are vital for building, maintaining, and improving dynamic web applications in fast-paced development environments.

What are some common challenges Entry Level Full Stack Developers face when transitioning from academic projects to real-world applications?

Entry Level Full Stack Developers often find that real-world projects are more complex and less structured than academic assignments. They may encounter challenges such as working with legacy code, collaborating across multidisciplinary teams, and managing competing priorities within agile development cycles. Additionally, adapting to company-specific workflows, version control practices, and deployment processes can be initially overwhelming. However, these experiences provide valuable learning opportunities and quickly build practical, in-demand skills.

What is an Entry Level Full Stack Developer?

An Entry Level Full Stack Developer is a professional who is new to the software development field and works on both the front-end (client side) and back-end (server side) of web applications. They are familiar with various programming languages, frameworks, and tools needed to build and maintain entire web projects. While they may have limited experience, they are capable of handling tasks such as developing user interfaces, creating APIs, managing databases, and deploying applications under the guidance of more experienced developers. Entry level full stack developers often work as part of a team and receive mentorship to help them grow their skills.

What is the difference between Entry Level Full Stack Developer vs Junior Web Developer?

AspectEntry Level Full Stack DeveloperJunior Web Developer
Required SkillsBasic knowledge of front-end and back-end technologies, programming languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and some backend frameworksFundamental web development skills, mainly front-end or back-end, with limited full-stack experience
Work EnvironmentCollaborates on full project cycles, working on both client and server-side codeFocuses on specific parts of web development, often under supervision
Common UsageUsed in companies seeking versatile developers capable of handling full-stack tasksOften entry-level roles focusing on specific web development tasks

In summary, Entry Level Full Stack Developers have a broader skill set covering both front-end and back-end development, while Junior Web Developers typically specialize in one area with limited full-stack responsibilities. The choice depends on your desired focus and career path in web development.

Job description

Full-Stack Engineer
Dallas, TX | Hybrid (Bishop Arts preferred) | Full-time
Reports to Co-founder/CTO

Why this role exists

Our client is building an AI-powered contract intelligence platform that sits on top of ERP and AP systems to validate invoices against contract terms before payment.

This role exists to build and scale the core product, from user-facing interfaces to backend systems that ingest contracts, translate them into executable logic, and validate invoice data in real time.

If you enjoy solving ambiguous problems, building systems from scratch, and shipping quickly in a startup environment, this will feel like a strong fit.

What you will own

Full-stack Product Development

  • Build and ship end-to-end product features across frontend, backend, and data layers
  • Develop user interfaces that surface validation results, exceptions, and workflows clearly
  • Design and implement backend services that process contracts, invoices, and validation logic
  • Own features from concept build deploy iterate
  • Rapidly prototype and improve workflows using AI-augmented development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, and v0 to maximize engineering output and speed

Data + system architecture

  • Build systems that ingest and process unstructured contract data (PDFs, spreadsheets, emails)
  • Translate complex contract terms (pricing, caps, escalators) into structured, executable logic
  • Design scalable pipelines for invoice validation and exception handling
  • Improve performance, reliability, and maintainability of production systems

Integrations + Infrastructure

  • Build integrations with ERP/AP systems (e.g., SAP, NetSuite, Workday) via APIs or data pipelines
  • Own systems in production, including deployment workflows, observability, environment configuration, and operational reliability
  • Set up and maintain CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes
  • Apply sound security practices for APIs, authentication, access control, and sensitive financial data
Product + iteration velocity
  • Work closely with the CTO and early team to turn customer needs into working product features
  • Rapidly prototype and iterate based on customer feedback
  • Make thoughtful engineering trade-offs in a fast-moving environment with limited process and high ownership
What success looks like in your first 90 days
  • You ship meaningful product features used by real customers
  • Core workflows (contract ingestion validation exception handling) become more reliable
  • You improve system performance, data handling, observability, or user experience in measurable ways
  • CI/CD, deployment, and monitoring workflows become more stable and scalable
  • You are contributing independently and unblocking progress across the stack
  • You help turn ambiguous product problems into working solutions
The profile that tends to win here
  • You are comfortable operating in ambiguity and figuring things out without full specs
  • You are a builder, you ship, iterate, and improve quickly
  • You care about solving real-world problems, not just writing clean code
  • You can move across the stack without friction (frontend backend data)
  • You prioritize outcomes and impact over process
  • You actively learn and adapt to emerging tools, frameworks, and engineering practices without needing direction
  • You use AI tooling as a force multiplier and naturally incorporate it into your workflow
  • You take ownership of systems in production, not just local development
  • You have strong product instincts and empathy for customer workflows

Qualifications
  • 36+ years of experience as a Full-Stack Engineer or similar role
  • Strong experience with modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Next.js)
  • Strong backend development experience (e.g., Node.js, Python, or similar)
  • Experience designing APIs and working with distributed systems
  • Familiarity with data processing, pipelines, or working with unstructured data
  • Experience building and shipping production systems
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, deployment workflows, and cloud infrastructure
  • Familiarity with observability tooling (logging, monitoring, alerting)
  • Working knowledge of application security, API authentication, and handling sensitive data responsibly
  • Comfortable working in a startup or fast-moving environment

Nice to have:

  • Experience with AI/ML, NLP, or LLM-based systems
  • Experience working with financial systems, ERP, or AP workflows
  • Exposure to contract data, invoice processing, or data validation systems
  • Experience building internal tooling or workflow automation systems
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and deployment platforms
Compensation + benefits
  • Competitive base salary
  • Performance bonus
