What does an entry level finance analyst do?

An Entry Level Finance Analyst is responsible for supporting senior analysts and finance teams by collecting, analyzing, and interpreting financial data. They help prepare reports, monitor budgets, and forecast financial trends to assist organizations in making informed business decisions. Typical daily tasks include data entry, variance analysis, and assisting with the creation of financial models. This role serves as a foundation for a career in finance, providing essential training and experience in financial analysis and reporting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level finance analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Finance Analyst, you need a solid grasp of financial principles, quantitative analysis, and a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Familiarity with Excel, financial modeling software, and data visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI is typically expected. Analytical thinking, strong attention to detail, and effective communication are critical soft skills for excelling in this role. These abilities are essential for accurately interpreting financial data, supporting business decisions, and collaborating across teams in a fast-paced environment.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level finance analysts, and how can they overcome them?

Entry level finance analysts often encounter challenges such as adapting to fast-paced environments, learning complex financial systems, and mastering data analysis tools like Excel or financial modeling software. Navigating large volumes of data and meeting tight deadlines can be demanding, but seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues and proactively asking questions can help ease the transition. Building strong communication skills and collaborating closely with team members in accounting, operations, and management will also support your growth and success in this role.

Can you become an entry level finance analyst with no experience?

Entry level finance analyst positions often require some knowledge of finance principles, Excel, and data analysis, but many employers are willing to consider candidates with limited or no experience if they demonstrate strong analytical skills and a willingness to learn. Internships, relevant coursework, or certifications like CFA Level 1 can improve chances of entry. Entry-level roles typically focus on training and development for new hires.

  • Maintain the integrity of financial records, ensure compliance with accounting policies and procedures, and support audits, regulatory reporting, and banking requirements.
  • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, while maintaining accurate records for Rhino and affiliated real estate entities.

Financial Planning, Analysis & Cash Management

  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis by evaluating business performance, monitoring variances, and providing insights to support decision-making.

  • Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, leverage technology, and enhance operational efficiency.

Fixed Assets & Capital Management

  • Manage fixed asset accounting activities, including tracking capital expenditures, maintaining asset records, monitoring work-in-progress projects, recording depreciation and amortization, and coordinating asset disposals.
  • Partner with operational teams to ensure capital investments are accurately recorded and properly capitalized.

Insurance, Credit & Business Support

  • Support insurance administration, including annual renewals, policy documentation, and insurance verification requests.
  • Assist with customer credit reviews, credit limit recommendations, and collection activities for accounts that fall outside payment terms.

Requirements

What you'll need to succeed:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Entry-level accounting or finance experience through coursework, internships, co-ops, or previous work experience.
  • Foundational understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial reporting practices.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze information, identify discrepancies, and approach problems with curiosity and sound judgment.
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly and effectively.
  • Comfortable working with spreadsheets, financial systems, and data, with a willingness to learn new tools and technology.
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage multiple deadlines, and adapt to changing business needs.
  • Collaborative approach and willingness to learn, ask questions, share knowledge, and support teammates.
  • Interest in developing skills across accounting, financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and other areas of finance.
  • Ability to utilize email, Microsoft applications, and other internal software for daily communication between facilities, shifts, and departments.
