Job description

Field Engineer - Entry Level
RFK Bridge (Triborough Bridge) Rehabilitation Program - New York, NY
About American Bridge (AB)
American Bridge Company (AB) is a founding member of the Southland (SLND) family of companies and one of the nation's oldest and most respected heavy-civil and bridge construction firms. For more than a century, AB has built and rehabilitated some of America's most significant bridges, tunnels, and marine structures, and self-performs the majority of its work to deliver safety, quality, and schedule certainty for its clients.
Project Overview
AB is performing major rehabilitation work on the RFK (Triborough) Bridge, one of the most heavily traveled bridge crossings in New York City. The scope includes structural steel repairs, deck and coating work, and other rehabilitation activities carried out on an active, high-profile crossing - requiring close coordination with the client, disciplined sequencing, and an unwavering focus on safety in a complex urban environment.
Position Summary
This is an entry-level, early-career opportunity for a recent graduate to begin a career in heavy-civil and bridge construction. The Field Engineer works directly with the project's superintendents, engineers, and craft supervisors to support day-to-day construction operations, and receives hands-on training and mentorship from experienced field leadership. It's a jobsite-based role suited to someone who wants to learn the business of building from the ground up - tracking progress, solving problems in real time, and helping the team deliver safe, quality work on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
• Support daily field operations, including tracking productivity, materials, and equipment against the project schedule.
• Assist with quantity tracking, quality control inspections, and documentation of field work.
• Help prepare and maintain as-built drawings, RFIs, submittals, and daily field reports.
• Coordinate with surveyors, subcontractors, and craft supervision to keep work areas organized and on sequence.
• Participate in job-site safety programs, toolbox talks, and inspections, reinforcing AB's zero-incident safety culture.
• Support scheduling efforts by monitoring progress and flagging constraints to the project team.
• Work closely with the project engineer and superintendent to troubleshoot field issues as they arise.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, completed or expected within the year - no prior full-time work experience required.
• Internship, co-op, or coursework exposure to heavy-civil, bridge, or industrial construction is a plus, but not required.
• Basic understanding of construction means, methods, and drawing/plan reading, developed through coursework or hands-on experience.
• Comfortable working outdoors, at heights, and around active bridge and marine construction operations.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; familiarity with Microsoft Office is expected, and scheduling software (P6 or similar) is a plus.
• Clear communicator, eager to learn, and works well as part of a jobsite team.
• Willingness to relocate to, or commute regularly to, the New York City jobsite.
Logistics
Location: RFK (Triborough) Bridge jobsite, New York, NY
Reports to: Project Engineer / Superintendent
Schedule: Full-time, jobsite-based; hours align with active construction operations
Travel / Relocation: Local to the NYC jobsite; relocation support discussed with qualified candidates
Why AB
AB team members work on landmark infrastructure that shapes the communities they serve. As an entry-level Field Engineer, you'll gain direct, hands-on exposure to complex heavy-civil construction, structured mentorship from experienced project teams, and a clear career path toward roles in project engineering and construction management - all within a company that puts safety and its people first.
