What does an entry level field biologist do?
An Entry Level Field Biologist conducts fieldwork to collect environmental and biological data, such as studying wildlife, plants, and ecosystems. They assist in research projects, habitat assessments, and environmental impact studies. Responsibilities may include data recording, sample collection, species identification, and report preparation. They often work outdoors in various weather conditions and collaborate with scientists or environmental organizations. This role provides hands-on experience in biological research and conservation efforts.
What skills and qualifications are needed for an entry level field biologist?
To thrive as an Entry Level Field Biologist, you need a solid background in biological sciences, basic field research techniques, and a bachelor's degree in biology or a related field. Familiarity with data collection tools such as GPS units, GIS software, sampling equipment, and sometimes a valid driver’s license or first aid certification is often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication and teamwork skills are highly valued in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate data collection, safe and efficient fieldwork, and effective collaboration on research projects.

A typical day for an entry level field biologist often involves traveling to various natural sites to collect environmental data, conduct species surveys, or monitor habitats. You may spend several hours outdoors recording observations, taking samples, or using specialized equipment, followed by time in the office organizing data and preparing reports. Most entry level biologists work closely with senior researchers and other team members, so collaboration and communication are important. While schedules can vary based on the season and project needs, expect a mix of fieldwork, laboratory tasks, and reporting duties. This variety makes the role both dynamic and a great foundation for future career advancement in biology or environmental science.
