Job description

Part time ESL Teacher - Elementary School

Salisbury Township School District has an opening for a part-time ESL Teacher for the start of the 2026-2027 school year. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about the Pennsylvania Core Standards, as well as the Pennsylvania English Language Proficiency Standards. S/he will possess the expertise to help second language learners be successful academically and socially. The ESL teacher will plan and deliver direct instruction to second language learners in a school setting, using a broad range of appropriate differentiated techniques and strategies that address all aspects of communication. The teacher of ESL will develop each student's ability to read, write, speak, listen and comprehend in all content areas at levels to ensure learners meet or exceed learning targets and provide meaningful access to the district's instructional program. In addition, the ESL teacher will collaborate with general education teachers to create modifications to instruction, assessment and the environment for ESL students based on their English language proficiency. The ESL teacher will administer academic and language assessments as evidence of growth and progress and maintain accurate records of student progress. The ESL teacher will create a nurturing and supportive environment that motivates and challenges ESL learners. The teacher of English Language as a Second Second Language must possess the interpersonal skill set to develop a rapport with English Language Learners and their families and to facilitate frequent and effective home-school communications. Appropriate PA certification required. Preferred candidates will be highly motivated professionals with experience teaching in a similar school setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, appropriate to the maturity and interests of students and provides for alternatives to learning styles.
  2. Endeavors at all times to maintain courteous bearing and an impartial attitude toward all students and maintains dignity in the classroom.  In all professional and personal relations, follows a course of conduct consistent with the PA Code of Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators (attached).
  3. Organizes, plans and implements a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of ELL students.  Supportive services and/or training for children with special needs will be provided by the district.
  4. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, and in harmony with the student's and strategic planning goals, established clear communicated objectives and procedures for all lessons, units, and projects.  Course expectations are communicated to students and are available to parents.
  5. Employs a variety of instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  6. Assesses the accomplishments of ELL students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required by policy and procedure.
  7. Develops and administers necessary pre and post assessments to determine needs and achievements.  Modifies instruction accordingly and provides progress reports as required.
  8. Assista classroom/core subject staff members teaching English Language Learners to participate successfully in classes.
  9. Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for educationally related purposes.
  10. Implements all Board of Educators policies; adheres to rules governing student life and conduct; develops within the classroom reasonable rules and procedures; encourages students to establish and maintain appropriate standards of behavior; and maintains order in a fair and just manner.
  11. Attends faculty meetings and other appropriate professional activities unless excused by principal (for example:  teacher/parent meetings and conferences, inservice programs, departmental/grade level meetings, etc.).
  12. Accepts voluntarily a share of responsibility for co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
  13. Teachers are expected to participate in professional growth activities through an ongoing program of reading workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning as may be funded by the District.
  14. Utilizes current educational technologies, within the framework of the curriculum, and implements technology strategies effectively in the classroom.
  15. Assists in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials for ELL students.
  16. Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students.
  17. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect equipment, materials and facilities.
  18. Cooperates with health and administrative professionals in maintaining the health and well being of students.
  19. Adheres to guidelines described in building faculty handbooks.
  20. Assumes other appropriate duties as customarily performed by teachers when assigned by Administration.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid and current Pennsylvania professional level 1 or 2 certificate and Pennsylvania Endorsement as Program Specialist-ESL by 2004-2005.  In addition, undergraduate and/or graduate course work should include work in learning theory, human relations, child development, group dynamics, student assessment, test development and interpretation, teaching of reading, and diagnosis of need for learning support, and use of technology in the classroom.  Knowledge of appropriate content area and ability to implement state-of-the-art learning strategies encompassing latest pedagogical research and practice.  Belief system commensurate with that of the Salisbury Township School District including but not limited to the quality principles of continuous improvement and student/parent focus.

JOB GOAL:

The ESL Teacher will instruct English Language Learners in academic, social, and cultural skills necessary to succeed in an educational environment.  He/she will teach reading, writing, speaking, and listening at appropriate developmental and proficiency levels to facilitate students' success in their academic program.  The ESL teacher will also consult with content area teachers regarding the appropriate instructional methods for ELL students.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  This employee 
must be available during normal business hours, and may be required, on
occasion, to attend some meetings and/or events in the evening or during the
