What is an entry level embedded software engineer?

An Entry Level Embedded Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software that runs on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers and IoT devices. They work with low-level programming languages like C and C++, interact with hardware, and optimize system performance. Responsibilities often include writing firmware, debugging code, and collaborating with hardware engineers. This role is ideal for candidates with a background in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field and a strong understanding of embedded systems concepts.

What does a typical day look like for an entry level embedded software engineer?

A typical day for an Entry Level Embedded Software Engineer often includes writing and reviewing code, testing software on hardware platforms, and debugging issues alongside more experienced team members. You'll likely participate in daily stand-up meetings, collaborate with hardware engineers, and contribute to ongoing projects through documentation or prototype development. While much of the work involves technical programming, you may also have the opportunity to engage in design discussions and learn from senior engineers. This balance of hands-on coding, testing, and teamwork helps you gain practical experience and develop your engineering skills early in your career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level embedded software engineer?

To succeed as an Entry Level Embedded Software Engineer, strong programming skills in C/C++, understanding of microcontrollers, and a relevant engineering degree are fundamental. Familiarity with embedded development environments, version control systems such as Git, and basic debugging tools is highly valued, though certifications like embedded systems courses can be advantageous. Effective communication, problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to learn help candidates integrate smoothly into multidisciplinary teams. These qualifications are essential because they ensure you can develop, test, and troubleshoot reliable embedded software within collaborative engineering environments.

Job description

Lexington Medical, Inc. is hiring an Electrical/Embedded Software Engineering Intern for Summer 2027 at our headquarters in Bedford, MA. You will join our R&D team and gain hands-on experience developing the embedded hardware and software behind our AEON™ surgical stapling platform. Depending on your background and project needs, your work may span electrical design, embedded firmware, PCB development, hardware bring-up, testing, debugging, and hardware-software integration.

About Lexington Medical

Lexington Medical, Inc. is a medical device company designing and manufacturing surgical stapling technology at our headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, just outside Boston. Our AEON™ Endostapler is an FDA-cleared, minimally invasive surgical stapler used in operating rooms around the world.

With electrical, software, mechanical, manufacturing, and quality teams working closely together under one roof, interns stay close to the product and see how engineering concepts move through development, prototyping, testing, verification, manufacturing, and ultimately into the operating room.

About the Internship

As an Electrical/ Embedded Software Engineering Intern at Lexington Medical, you will work alongside our R&D engineers developing embedded systems for electromechanical surgical devices. You will contribute to real engineering projects involving the interaction between electronics, embedded firmware, motors, sensors, and physical mechanisms.

Depending on your experience and interests, you may work more heavily on electrical hardware, embedded software, or projects that cross both areas. This could include designing and testing circuits, supporting PCB development, writing and debugging embedded code, bringing up new hardware, integrating sensors and motors, or troubleshooting complete electromechanical systems.

This is a good fit for a student who likes understanding how hardware and software work together and wants to build, test, debug, and improve real products rather than work only in simulation or theory.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the development and testing of embedded electrical and software systems.
  • Develop, test, and debug embedded firmware using C/C++.
  • Assist with schematic capture, PCB design, and component selection.
  • Support hardware bring-up, bench testing, and system-level debugging.
  • Work with microcontrollers, sensors, motors, actuators, and other electromechanical components.
  • Use electrical test equipment to troubleshoot hardware and firmware.
  • Collaborate with electrical, software, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers.
  • Support engineering testing, verification, and technical documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related technical field.
  • Coursework or project experience with embedded systems, electronics, microcontrollers, PCB design, firmware, or robotics.
  • Experience programming in C or C++.
  • Hands-on experience building, testing, or debugging hardware or embedded systems.
  • Prior internship, co-op, research, or substantial hands-on project experience preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and attention to detail.

What Success Looks Like

  • By the middle of the summer, you can contribute to day-to-day electrical and embedded software engineering work with increasing independence and understand how hardware, firmware, and electromechanical systems work together.
  • By the end of the internship, you have completed a meaningful electrical, embedded software, or hardware-software integration project that the engineering team can continue using after you leave.
  • You leave with concrete examples of hardware or firmware you developed, technical problems you solved, and engineering decisions you made on a real medical device.

Program Details

  • Timing: June 2027 through August 2027, approximately three months.
  • Schedule: Full-time, five days per week on-site in Bedford, Massachusetts.

Location & Work Arrangement

This internship is based at our headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, in the Greater Boston area, and is fully on-site five days per week.
