Job description

Assistant/Associate Professor of Teaching

Department of Applied Technology
The Polytechnic@UofM at the University of Memphis invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Teaching in Information Technology. This is a twelve-month, non-tenure track appointment. The Assistant/Associate Professor of Teaching will teach primarily at the Memphis campus though teaching at off-campus sites or online may be required. Teaching in the summer and advising undergraduate majors on their curriculum in Applied Technology, Engineering Technology, or other Polytechnic programs may also be required. The typical teaching load is 3 or 4 courses per semester, depending on other service activities. A background in computer software or managing information systems is required. In addition, this position will assist with the development and implementation of applied cybersecurity and applied AI programs, and thus, experience in these areas is preferred. 

The University of Memphis is a State of Tennessee Carnegie R1 flagship university and is the largest public university and engineering program in western Tennessee with an enrollment of about 22,000 students. The Herff College of Engineering at The University of Memphis is nationally ranked in both its undergraduate and graduate programs. The Polytechnic@UofM houses the Departments of Applied Technology and Engineering Technology and has 10 faculty members and an enrollment of about 400 students pursuing bachelor's and master's degrees. The Polytechnic@UofM, has been created to offer innovative programs in applied technology with a focus on workforce readiness.

The city of Memphis is an attractive location in Tennessee, and is world-renowned for its music, food, and hospitality. Memphis is home to three Fortune 500 companies (FedEx, International Paper, and AutoZone) and has a strong presence in health, medical devices, transportation and logistics, automotive, and entertainment industries. The Herff College has many partnerships with local industry for both research and education applications.

Candidates must have a strong commitment to undergraduate instruction and curriculum development, including online content.  The candidate should have a background in computer programming, networking, embedded systems, or management of information systems. Knowledge of cybersecurity and/or artificial intelligence is desired. Experience teaching engineering technology courses and developing engineering technology curricula in an ABET/ETAC accredited program is a plus.

The anticipated start date is August 1, 2026.  Applicants with a PhD from an accredited institution in either Computer Science, Engineering, Engineering Technology, Management Information Systems, or a closely related field are desired.  A master's degree in one of these areas is the minimum requirement.  Experience in college teaching and curriculum development in fields related to information technology is desired, as is industrial experience.

(1) Teaching Statement (1 page): Describe your teaching experiences and training, overall approach to teaching, and how you see yourself contributing to our undergraduate engineering and information technology programs. Identify specific undergraduate courses that you are interested or able to teach. Describe your experience teaching programming, your expertise with different programming languages, and any experience with cybersecurity or artificial intelligence.
