Job description

Casne Engineering is seeking an experienced Power Studies Engineer to support a growing portfolio of electrical power system studies for large-scale and hyperscale data center clients. The primary focus of this fully remote position is short-circuit, protective device coordination, and arc-flash analysis (SCCAF), with additional opportunities to perform load flow, harmonic, and related power system studies. A significant portion of the work is performed using SKM PowerTools.

This is not intended as an entry-level power studies position. Candidates must have a minimum of two years of directly relevant professional power system studies experience to be considered for the fully remote role.


Position Overview

As a Power Studies Engineer, you will develop and maintain electrical system models and perform detailed power system analyses supporting data center and other mission-critical facilities.

The primary focus of this position is short-circuit, protective device coordination, and arc-flash analysis (SCCAF). A substantial portion of the workload involves developing, validating, analyzing, and documenting large electrical system models for hyperscale data center clients, primarily using SKM PowerTools.

Additional studies may include load flow and harmonic analysis, depending on project requirements. Experience performing these studies is valuable, but candidates should have a strong foundation in SCCAF work and be comfortable taking meaningful ownership of those studies from model development through final reporting.

This fully remote role requires an engineer who can work effectively with limited day-to-day supervision while collaborating with Casne project managers, engineers, client engineering teams, and other project stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform short-circuit, protective device coordination, and arc-flash studies (SCCAF) for data center and mission-critical facilities.
  • Develop, modify, validate, and maintain detailed electrical system models, primarily using SKM PowerTools.
  • Perform load flow studies to evaluate system loading, voltage performance, equipment utilization, and operating conditions.
  • Perform or support harmonic studies to evaluate distortion, system resonance, and other power-quality concerns as project requirements dictate.
  • Review electrical one-line diagrams, equipment schedules, protective device information, manufacturer data, and field documentation to establish accurate study models.
  • Perform short-circuit calculations and evaluate equipment interrupting and withstand ratings.
  • Develop and evaluate protective device coordination using time-current curves and equipment-specific operating characteristics.
  • Perform arc-flash hazard calculations and identify technically appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Identify incomplete, inconsistent, or questionable study inputs and work with project teams and clients to resolve them.
  • Evaluate study results using sound engineering judgment rather than relying solely on software-generated outputs.
  • Develop clear, technically defensible study reports documenting assumptions, results, deficiencies, and recommendations.
  • Coordinate directly with client engineers and project stakeholders to resolve technical questions and communicate study findings.
  • Manage multiple concurrent study assignments while maintaining project schedules and Casne quality standards.
  • Apply relevant industry standards and requirements, including IEEE, NFPA 70E, NEC, and client-specific study criteria.
  • Participate in internal QA/QC reviews and incorporate technical feedback into final deliverables.
  • Travel occasionally when project requirements make field investigation, client meetings, or other on-site support necessary.

Qualifications & Experience

Required (Technical)

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience directly performing electrical power system studies.
  • Hands-on experience performing:
    • Short-circuit analysis
    • Protective device coordination
    • Arc-flash analysis
  • Professional experience using SKM PowerTools, EasyPower, ETAP, or comparable power system analysis software.
  • Experience building, modifying, and validating electrical system models rather than solely reviewing study results prepared by others.
  • Ability to interpret electrical one-line diagrams and understand medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Working knowledge of protective devices, including circuit breakers, fuses, relays, and associated coordination concepts.
  • Understanding of applicable arc-flash study standards and practices.
  • Ability to independently investigate model discrepancies and technical issues.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively in a fully remote work environment.

  • Experience supporting hyperscale data center projects.
  • Two or more years of hands-on SKM PowerTools experience.
  • Experience developing and maintaining large or complex SKM models.
  • Experience performing load flow studies.
  • Experience performing harmonic studies.
  • Experience with highly redundant or mission-critical electrical distribution architectures.
  • Experience with utility sources, generators, UPS systems, transformers, switchgear, switchboards, ATSs, PDUs, and similar data center infrastructure.
  • Experience independently preparing complete client-facing power system study reports.
  • Experience interacting directly with client electrical engineers to resolve study inputs and technical findings.
  • Experience evaluating protective device settings and recommending coordination improvements.
  • EIT certification, successful completion of the FE exam, or Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration.
