What is an entry level draftsman?

Entry level draftsmen are professionals who create technical drawings and plans used in construction, manufacturing, and engineering projects. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced draftsmen or engineers and use computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce detailed diagrams based on specifications. Their responsibilities may include revising drawings, preparing layouts, and ensuring that plans comply with industry standards. Entry level draftsmen often have an associate degree or a certificate in drafting and are building foundational skills in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level draftsman?

To thrive as an Entry Level Draftsman, you need fundamental knowledge of drafting techniques, attention to detail, and a relevant associate degree or technical certification. Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks and familiarity with industry standards are typically required. Strong communication, organization, and the ability to follow instructions help set candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing precise technical drawings that support engineers and architects in delivering accurate project plans.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level draftsmen, and how can they overcome them?

Entry level draftsmen often encounter challenges such as adapting to new drafting software, interpreting complex design specifications, and ensuring accuracy in technical drawings under tight deadlines. To overcome these challenges, it's important to seek feedback from senior team members, participate in hands-on training sessions, and consistently review project requirements before starting each task. Developing strong communication skills and asking clarifying questions can also help ensure your work aligns with engineers’ or architects’ expectations.

Job description

Description:Build Homes. Build Skills. Build Your Career.

For more than 34 years, Mitchell Homes has helped families across Virginia turn their land into the home of their dreams. As one of the region's largest and most trusted on-your-lot homebuilders, we've built our reputation the same way we build our homes — with craftsmanship, integrity, and a team that takes pride in every detail.

Now we're looking for a talented Drafter skilled in Revit to join our team. Whether you're launching your drafting career or bringing a few years of experience to the table, this is a rare opportunity to do meaningful work that you can literally see standing on land across Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

What You'll Do

Your drawings will be the blueprint — literally — for every home we build. You will:

  • Produce accurate, polished Revit drawings for residential homes, from sales drawings for customer approval to permit drawings for county approval
  • Collaborate daily with our sales and estimating departments, engineers, lumber suppliers, and cabinet partners
  • Work directly with county permitting departments across VA, MD, NC and SC
  • Assist in reviewing project files to keep every home on track
What Makes This Role Rewarding
  • Real impact: The plans you draft become real homes for real families — there's no more satisfying way to put your skills to work.
  • Room to grow: Learn from an experienced team at an established, thriving company. We invest in our people with professional development assistance and a clear path to advance.
  • Excellence gets rewarded: We notice — and reward — team members who bring speed, accuracy, and great ideas to the table.
  • A team you'll enjoy: Positive attitudes and easy-going personalities aren't just welcome here; they're how we work.
  • Stability you can count on: Join a company with 34 years of continuous success and a full pipeline of projects.
What You'll Bring
  • A degree in drafting/design (Associate degree required)
  • Proficiency in Revit (minimum 1 year) — Revit is how we produce ALL of our drawings, so genuine comfort with it is essential. Entry-level to mid-level candidates encouraged to apply.
  • Speed and accuracy — you can draft plans quickly without sacrificing quality
  • Strong verbal, written, and graphic communication skills
  • The ability to multitask, prioritize, and find the most efficient path to the goal
  • Exceptional follow-up skills and a knack for solving problems
  • A positive attitude and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary: $45,000–$55,000/year, dependent on experience
  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Health savings account and flexible spending account
  • Life insurance and employee assistance program
  • Paid time off
  • Professional development assistance
  • Employee discount

Ready to help families build the homes they've always dreamed of — and build a career you're proud of at the same time?
