What does an entry level defense contractor software engineer do?

An Entry Level Defense Contractor Software Engineer works on developing, testing, and maintaining software systems used in defense applications. This role often involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to create secure and reliable solutions for military or government clients. Responsibilities might include writing code, debugging software, and ensuring compliance with security and quality standards specific to the defense industry. Entry-level engineers often receive mentorship and training to help them understand specialized technologies and protocols required for defense projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level defense contractor software engineer?

To thrive as an Entry Level Defense Contractor Software Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or software engineering, with proficiency in programming languages such as C++, Java, or Python, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and compliance with security standards such as DoD STIGs or obtaining a Security+ certification may be required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for success in this environment. These skills and qualifications are vital to produce secure, reliable software that meets strict governmental regulations and supports critical defense operations.

What types of projects and technologies do entry level defense contractor software engineers typically work on?

As an entry-level software engineer in the defense contracting industry, you will often work on projects related to embedded systems, simulation software, cybersecurity applications, or mission-critical systems. Technologies commonly used include programming languages like C++, Java, or Python, as well as specialized tools for version control, testing, and secure software development. You’ll collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including systems engineers, project managers, and, at times, hardware engineers. A key challenge is adhering to strict security protocols and regulatory standards, but you will gain valuable experience in secure coding practices and large-scale system integration. These projects provide a strong foundation for future advancement within the industry.

What is the difference between Entry Level Defense Contractor Software Engineer vs Entry Level Software Developer?

Job description

Arcadis is the world's leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets.

We are more than 34,000 people, in over 30 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world's most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.

Role description:

We are seeking a talented and motivated Electrical Engineer to join our Rail & Transit team. In this role, you will contribute to the planning, design, coordination, and delivery of electrical systems for complex railway and transit infrastructure projects. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support safe, reliable, and sustainable transportation solutions that improve quality of life for communities.

The successful candidate will bring strong technical capability in the design and delivery of railway electrical systems, a collaborative mindset, and a passion for solving complex mobility challenges. This role offers the opportunity to work across a range of projects, from feasibility and concept development through detailed design and construction support.

Role accountabilities:

As an Electrical Engineer in our Rail & Transit team, you will support the design and engineering of electrical systems for a wide range of railway and transit projects. This includes traction power, low voltage power distribution, lighting, grounding and bonding, and associated infrastructure. You will contribute across concept, preliminary, and detailed design phases for stations, guideways, depots, tunnels, and corridor infrastructure, applying strong technical and analytical problem-solving skills to help deliver safe, reliable, and efficient transportation solutions. A strong commitment to health, safety, sustainability, and quality will be essential in supporting successful project outcomes.

You will prepare and review technical reports, engineering calculations, design drawings, specifications, and other key project documents to ensure they meet project requirements, applicable codes and standards, and client expectations. This work will require attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage priorities while delivering high-quality work within deadlines. You will also apply relevant railway, transit, and electrical engineering best practices, taking a proactive and solutions-oriented approach to identifying technical issues, project risks, and opportunities for improvement, with a focus on achieving practical, value-driven outcomes for clients and communities.

Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will coordinate with civil, structural, track, signaling, systems, and mechanical disciplines to support integrated project delivery. Success in this role will depend on your ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and client-focused environment, as well as your effective written and verbal communication skills. You will also assist with coordination across clients, stakeholders, contractors, and project partners, helping to maintain alignment, build strong working relationships, and support efficient project execution throughout the project lifecycle.

You will also support project delivery in line with scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety objectives. Depending on project needs, this may include participating in site visits, inspections, field investigations, and construction support activities, as well as contributing to proposals, technical submissions, and project planning. The role calls for someone who is adaptable, proactive, and responsive to changing project needs, while contributing to a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement across the team.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university
  • Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng.) or eligibility for registration with the relevant provincial engineering association is preferred
  • Experience in the design and delivery of railway, transit, transportation, or infrastructure projects
  • Demonstrated understanding of electrical systems related to rail and transit environments, such as
    • Traction power systems
    • Low voltage power distribution
    • EMI/EMC analysis
    • Grounding and bonding
    • Backup power / UPS systems
    • Conduit and cable routing
    • Equipment, rooms, and electrical layouts
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations applicable to railway and transit projects
  • Experience preparing engineering calculations, technical specifications, reports, and design documentation
  • Proficiency with standard engineering software and design tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Revit, or other related platforms is considered an asset
  • Strong understanding of multidisciplinary project environments and integrated design delivery
  • Experience supporting projects through design, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases is an asset
