Job description

Yelp engineering culture is driven by our values: we’re a cooperative team that values individual authenticity and encourages creative solutions to problems. All new engineers deploy working code their first week, and we strive to broaden individual impact with support from managers, mentors, and teams. At the end of the day, we’re all about helping our users, growing as engineers, and having fun in a collaborative environment.

Yelp's Content Safety team is the real-time enforcement engine of Trust & Safety. We protect the platform from fake accounts, inappropriate content, and disruptive interactions, stopping harmful content within seconds to hours across Yelp's consumer and business-facing surfaces.

As an entry-level Data Backend Engineer , you will contribute to the systems that keep Yelp trustworthy at scale. This includes enforcement pipelines, data infrastructure, and internal tooling used by operations and moderation teams to review and act on flagged content and accounts. You will work closely with your fellow engineers and ML specialists to contribute valuable code and ship work that has a direct impact on the safety of millions of users.

You’ll have the opportunity to build deep backend and data engineering skills on meaningful, high-stakes problems.

This opportunity is fully remote and does not require you to be located in any particular area in Canada. We welcome applicants from throughout Canada. We’d love to have you apply, even if you don’t feel you meet every single requirement in this posting. At Yelp, we’re looking for great people, not just those who simply check off all the boxes.

  • Design and build backend services and data pipelines that power real-time detection and enforcement of fake accounts and harmful content, with a focus on code quality, testability, and maintainability
  • Write, test, and ship production-grade Python code across Content Safety's enforcement stack, following engineering best practices with guidance from senior engineers
  • Help build and maintain internal tooling used by moderators and operations teams to review and action flagged content and accounts
  • Help maintain and improve enforcement flows that quarantine content, close accounts, and block harmful interactions
  • Collaborate with ML engineers to support the productionization of detection signals and model outputs, with opportunities over time to contribute to analysis and model development.
  • Participate in code reviews, oncall rotations, and team processes to build operational instincts over time
  • Investigate production issues and contribute fixes across a complex, interconnected codebase

  • Proficiency in Python
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, system design, and a commitment to writing clean, tested, maintainable code
  • Familiarity with SQL and basic data processing concepts
  • Ability to ramp quickly on an unfamiliar codebase and ask good questions
  • Clear written and verbal communication as the team works cross-functionally and documents its work
  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience

  • There are a variety of factors that go into determining a compensation range, including but not limited to external market benchmark data and years of experience. Based on the anticipated level of experience that we are seeking, we expect the compensation range for this role to be between $[89,000] and $[134,000].  The actual compensation offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience and skill set.

  • There may be flexibility with the range included in this posting should a candidate be leveled higher or lower than the posted range.

  • This opportunity has the option to be fully remote in all locations across Canada.
  • This role is posted to fill an existing position.
  • You can find more information about Yelp's five star benefits here!
